A cage (from Latin cavea ) is a container that is closed on all sides , the sides of which are more or less perforated . It can be portable or designed as a building .

In contrast to the cage, a basket is not closed on all sides. The sides of a cage are usually not only straight surfaces, but can also be so strongly curved that it has the shape of a sphere , as flexible wickerwork made of different materials is often used. In the case of a very flexible wickerwork with textile properties, it is no longer a cage, but a net .

livestock farming

A cage for keeping animals does not hermetically seal the animal , but must be break-in and escape-proof. It serves the preservation of property, the protection of the animal from enemies and diseases and the protection of the environment from the animal. Whether caging is problematic or even cruelty to animals depends on size, stocking, the variety of employment opportunities and the time the keeper devotes to the animal. A transport cage, on the other hand, is only slightly larger than the animal.

Animal cages are often made of metal ( wire , bars ), wood, bamboo, willow rods or plastic. The floor is made of wood, concrete, plastic or earth, with mostly litter on top . Caged chickens are housed on sloping grids so that the excrement fall through and the eggs roll away.

Large Bird Cages hot aviaries , small and birdcage .

An open-topped container is possible, for example, for animals that do not jump or do not jump high, for example a box in a stable .

Outdoor facilities for keeping animals captive are enclosures , pens or outlets .

Mechanical components

A component of rolling bearings is also called a cage (ball cage, roller cage, etc.) - more precisely, a rolling element cage . It can consist of sheet metal or be solid (milled from solid, injection molded). The materials used are steel , brass , plastic or hard fabric . The task of the cage is to distribute the rolling elements evenly over the circumference and to prevent mutual contact. Rolling bearings without a cage are called full complement bearings.

Other cages

The Faraday cage does not necessarily resemble the container mentioned above. It is made of metal or it simply means a room that is shielded from electrical fields . This can also be the body of a car. See also shielding (shielding cage).

The roll bar of a car is often referred to as a cage.

Phrase

The saying "to sit in a golden cage" should mean that despite great wealth someone is in bondage.
