Under the name Maxima , Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik, a branch of Voith Turbo GmbH & Co. KG , sold four and six-axle line locomotives with diesel-hydraulic drives for freight and passenger transport. At the time of its commissioning, the largest model in the series, the now defunct Maxima 40 CC, was the world's most powerful single-engine six-axle diesel-hydraulic locomotive.

history

The Maxima 40 CC was the first locomotive that was designed and built independently by Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik GmbH & Co. KG. Back in the 1990s, Voith had developed the LS 640 reU2 gearbox, with which MaK Vossloh wanted to build a suitably powerful locomotive. Against the background of the large number of large Soviet diesel locomotives of the DR class 130 taken over from the Deutsche Reichsbahn after the fall of the Wall , Deutsche Bahn decided not to place a corresponding development contract with Vossloh. Because of the uncertain future of locomotive construction at Vossloh and in order to recoup development costs, Voith dared to design and build its own locomotive, the Maxima. The Maxima was specially designed by Voith Turbo for cross-border traffic, for example to the countries of Eastern Central Europe.

In 2006 the Maxima 40 CC was presented at the InnoTrans in Berlin. Two years later followed the largely identical Maxima 30 CC, but which has an engine with four fewer cylinders and an output of 850 kW less.

Also in September 2008, the previously unrealized Maxima 20 BB was presented at the same trade fair, with which Voith applied for an order from DB for up to 200 mainline diesel locomotives. The decision of the DB finally fell in favor of the Bombardier Traxx DE ME . The lower mass compared to diesel-electric competitors of the same performance class also resulted in no orders. It differs from the larger variants primarily in the weaker diesel engine, the four-axle configuration and a lower axle load .

In 2008 and 2009, test drives were carried out on the Velim railway test ring . On December 23, 2008, the Maxima 40 CC received approval from the Federal Railway Authority in Germany .

All Maxima 40 CC have been delivered since 2009, for example to the Berliner hvle , the Dutch leasing company Ox-traction (liquidated) or the track construction company Wiebe .

The Maxima 40 CC is no longer manufactured. The construction of the lighter variants 30 (L) CC and 20 (L) BB was planned, but production was not started.

variants

In order to be able to offer diesel-hydraulic locomotives with different traction tasks, Voith Turbo developed the mainline locomotives Maxima and the shunting locomotives Gravita . After production of the Maxima 40 CC was discontinued, the following variants of the Voith Maxima were offered:

Type Axis formula Power in kW Power in hp Maximum speed in km / h Starting tractive effort in kN Mass in t
Maxima 20 BB B'B ' 2000 2719 120 (optional 140) 281 72-82
Maxima 20 LBB B'B ' 2400 3263 140 (optional 160) 301 76-90
Maxima 30 CC C'C ' 2750 3739 120 432 126
Maxima 30 LCC C'C ' 3200 4351 120 412 120
Maxima 40 CC C'C ' 3500 4896 120 408 (max. 519) 126-135

construction

The locomotive body is made of steel . Both driver's cabs have two driver's seats (one for the engine driver and an additional co-driver's seat). The control panel is based on a standard driver's desk from Deutsche Bahn and is designed according to ergonomic principles. Both driver's cabs are air-conditioned and equipped with underfloor and footrest heating.

The Maxima 40 CC has a four - stroke diesel engine of the type ABC 16 V DZC from Anglo Belgian Corporation , which enables an operational starting tractive effort of 408 kN and a maximum starting tractive effort of 519 kN. The 30 CC is powered by a twelve-cylinder engine (ABC 12 V DZC) from the same manufacturer. The maximum speed of the Maxima 30 CC and 40 CC is 120 km / h, the smaller variants 20 BB and 20 LBB reach speeds of 120 (optionally 140) and 140 (optionally 160) km / h.

The engine has a turbo split gear 640 reU2 allows Voith LS that a separate anti-skid system for the two bogies. A dynamic and a pneumatic brake are available for braking. The smallest passable arc radius is 80 meters. The fuel tank of the six-axle versions holds up to 9,000 l of fuel (up to 10,000 l for the 30 CC) while it is up to 5,000 l for the 20 BB.

The design of the Voith Maxima was developed by ma design and was awarded the Red Dot Award in 2007 .

In mid-February 2008, 77 copies of the Maxima were ordered. Ox-traction ordered 15 Maxima 30 CC and 40 CC and signed another framework agreement for 23 units. Ox-traction NV was 44% owned by Voith Turbo, and in autumn 2010 the company ceased operations before all 15 machines were delivered.

The Havelländische Eisenbahn had ordered two Voith Maxima 40 CC for delivery in 2008 and 2009. In addition, a possible delivery of 6 more locomotives was agreed. Despite the high number of orders, only 13 Maxima 40 CC and 7 Maxima 30 CC were manufactured.

In total, Voith only manufactured 20 Maxima diesel locomotives before the plans to discontinue locomotive production in Kiel (for the time being) became known in January 2014.

Manufacturing and maintenance

Voith manufactured the Maxima in a factory built especially for the construction of the Maxima and Gravita on the grounds of the Kiel North Harbor directly on the Kiel Canal . Some Voith Maxima 40CC were also built under license by Legios in the Czech Republic.

For the maintenance of the vehicles, Voith has signed a contract with Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG (HGK) to set up a central workshop for Europe in Brühl-Vochem.
