Adalbertus Ranconis de Ericinio (Czech Vojtěch Raňkův z Ježova ; * around 1320 ; † August 15, 1388 ) was a Bohemian theologian and philosopher.

Life

Vojtech came from the rural nobility of the Raňek z Malého Ježova . In Paris he completed his studies in 1346 with the examination of the master of the seven arts . Then he was appointed procurator of the English nation and in 1352 a member of the university in Sorbonne . In 1355 he was appointed rector of the Paris University. In addition to his work at the music faculty, he continued his studies in philosophy and passed his bachelor's examination in 1363.

The stay in Paris was interrupted by stays as papal administrator in Avignon and Oxford . Here he met Richard Fitzralph († 1360) and made friends with him. At the age of 46 he returned to Prague and was appointed canon of the Prague chapter, in 1369 to its scholastics . In Prague there were arguments with Heinrich Totting von Oyta , whom he accused of heresy . In 1373 Heinrich was acquitted by the papal court in Avignon.

Vojtech fell out of favor with Emperor Charles IV and was expelled from the country. He returned to Paris. With the support of the later Archbishop of Prague Johann von Jenstein , he passed his examination as a doctor of theology there. In 1375 he returned to Bohemia, teaching and preaching. At the funeral of Charles IV, he was also allowed to give his funeral oration.

He sided with Urban VI during the Western Schism . , but also tolerated the other side. In 1386 there was a theological dispute with the Prague Archbishop and his former patron Johann von Jenstein. Here he stood up as a defender of the national state against the supporters of papal universalism and wrote his opinion down in Apologia .

In his sermons he appeared as a sharp critic of the prevailing conditions in the church and became more and more friends with the ideas of the Bohemian reformers. He corresponded with Konrad von Waldhausen and was close friends with Johannes Milicius . He bequeathed his fortune to a foundation that helped poor students study theology and philosophy in Paris and Oxford.

Works

Only a part of his extensive writings has survived, but it shows his deep knowledge and extensive education. He knew the Bible, studied ancient and medieval literature, and had extensive knowledge of philosophy, theology, and law. In his philosophical works he dealt with Plato , Aristotle , Seneca , Boëthius and Wilhelm von Ockham . He had written all of his writings in Latin.
