The Volkach is an approximately 7.5 km long stream in the Bavarian Middle Franconia , which flows into the lower Schwabach from the right and west-southwest near Unterreichenbach in the independent city of Schwabach .

geography

course

The Volkach arises on the southern slope of the Hinterberg ( 418.2  m above sea level ) in Gewann Im Winkel about one kilometer west of the district of Dechendorf in the municipality of Rohr in the district of Roth on the edge of a meadow bay in the Dechenwald at about 409  m above sea level. NHN , less than 100 meters north-northeast of the route of the A 6 . From here the water runs in an almost shrub-free meadow ditch through the brook meadows eastwards towards Dechendorf, leaves the forest area, feeds two small ponds and then crosses the street village in a very shallow hollow. After that, the Volkach continues to flow on its slowly north-westerly trench and about one and a half kilometers after its origin on the municipality boundary to Kammerstein in its meadow floodplain , it cuts a loosened forest bar, where the 0.8 km long Odengraben flows from the right in the area of half a dozen ponds which is also being built near the motorway. As far as the Kammerstein village of Volkersgau , strips of forest follow the brook on the right and left slopes of the valley basin, which has now deepened around 15 meters from the immediate surroundings.

In the settlement area of Volkersgau the brook enters between another accumulation of small ponds. Below the village, a road in the valley follows him permanently. Its longest tributary, which arises south of Rohr-Unterprünst, drains half a dozen ponds with a total area of more than 4.5 hectares on its upper course and flows away after a total of 1.7 km, flows a good three kilometers after its source; it is also a meadow ditch without any bushes or trees. Then on the longest part of the section to the next village of Oberreichenbach , forest belts on the left and right slopes accompany its meadow floodplains. Before and after the village, which is about 5.3 km down from the origin, it runs again between small ponds in the floodplain; In this area, some hillside springs feed further small ponds, especially in two short right valley bays.

Then the Volkach passes over to the district of the independent city of Schwabach , initially on the right slope accompanied by an outcrop of the large Laubenhaids forest on the edge of this side. After detaching from the forest, it shows beginnings of small meanders in its meadow for the first time and three hundred meters in front of the first houses in Unterreichenbach there is an accompanying gallery made of trees, which then largely follows the stream through the Schwabach district. In this, from the southern edge of the floodplain, it turns to the north course and then flows, after about 7.4 km, next to the Volkachstrasse in the area of the sports fields of the village from the right into the lower Schwabach.

Catchment area

The Volkach has an elongated catchment area of approx. 14.9 km² in the direction east-northeast. It borders on the southeast side of the catchment area of the Mainbach to Rednitz, in the south and southwest of the smaller tributaries of the Aurach, such as Geisbach and Lanzenbach, which flow further above the Schwabach into the Rednitz . In the north-west the ancestor competes with the upward Schwabach, in the north a short stream through the Limbachtal , in the north-east the proximity of the Schwabach does not leave any significant inflow from it.
