Volker Jung (born August 28, 1939 in Neuss ; † May 17, 2018 in Grünwald ) was a German engineer and member of the Management Board at Siemens AG .

Life

Jung studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Munich with a degree in engineering .

From 1964 he worked as a development engineer for Siemens & Halske AG. In 1969 he became head of the communications technology division. From 1984 he held a managerial position for Siemens' US subsidiaries in Boca Raton / Florida.

In 1991 he became a member of the Management Board of Siemens AG in Munich and head of the Central Office for International Regions. Until 2002 he was a member of the central board and was responsible for the areas of Information and Communication Networks, Information and Communication Products, Siemens Business Services, Semiconductors (from April 1999 Infineon Technologies AG), Electromechanical Components, Economic Regions Africa, Near a Middle East, CIS countries.

Jung was chairman of the supervisory board of Infineon Technologies AG, MAN AG and epcos AG and a member of the supervisory board of DAB bank AG, Vattenfall AG, and Messe München GmbH. He also held the positions of Vice President of the Federal Association of German Industry (BDI), the President of the Central Association of Electrical Engineering and Electronics Industry and of the Federal Association of Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media (BITKOM).

Investigations into corruption offenses

From 1998 to 2003 Jung was head of the supervisory board of Siemens' Greek subsidiary. According to the investigative authorities in Athens and Munich, the group paid bribes to business partners, politicians and parties in Greece during this period in order to receive lucrative contracts from the state and the national telephone company OTE , in particular the contract for the expansion and digitization of the Greek telephone network and the contract to set up the security system for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

In June 2009, Jung was summoned for questioning in Athens. While the former Greek Siemens managers Michael Christoforakos and Christos Karavelas escaped persecution by the Greek judiciary by fleeing abroad, Jung complied with the summons and was initially arrested and then released only on condition that they were not allowed to leave the country. Since then he has had to report regularly to the police on Paros , where he owns a holiday home.

Jung denies having known anything about bribe payments.

The impression was often given that the Greek judiciary had treated Jung as a bargaining chip in order to obtain the extradition of Christoforakos. At the beginning of March 2010, the Munich public prosecutor's office certified that there was “no initial suspicion” that he was involved in corruption offenses at Siemens.

Attempts by the German Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Justice as well as the former Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs, Otto Wiesheu , to campaign for the lifting of the travel ban were unsuccessful and were evidently understood by the Greek judiciary as undue influence.

After Jung's application to lift the travel ban was rejected on November 9, 2010, Jung fled Greece to Munich. The Greek judiciary then issued an international arrest warrant that was not carried out in Germany. However, Jung would have been arrested abroad. After Jung testified on the corruption allegations in Athens, the arrest warrant was overturned in November 2013 in return for a deposit of 80,000 euros. In November 2014, the public prosecutor's office in Athens published the indictment against the main accused Michael Christoforakos and 63 other parties, including the former corporate board members Heinrich von Pierer , Heinz-Joachim Neubürger and Volker Jung. The Siemens managers are charged with actively bribing public officials with kickbacks of almost 62 million euros.
