Volker Remmert

Volker R. Remmert (* 1966 in Göttingen ) is a German historian of mathematics and science .

Volker Remmert, son of the mathematician Reinhold Remmert , studied mathematics and history at the Universities of Freiburg , Zurich and Karlsruhe from 1987 to 1993 . In 1993 he made his mathematics diploma in Freiburg im Breisgau, where he received his doctorate in history in 1997 . In 2003 he completed his habilitation at the University of Friborg in Switzerland in Modern History and was retrained in 2006 at the University of Mainz . Until 2010 he was a private lecturer and research assistant in the working group History of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, then in 2010/11 Associate Professor at the Department for Science Studies at Aarhus University in Denmark. He spent research stays at the Herzog August Library in Wolfenbüttel , at the Warburg Institute in London as a Frances Yates Fellow and at the Dibner Institute for the History of Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . Since 2011 he has been professor for the history of science and technology at the University of Wuppertal .

As a mathematician, he dealt particularly intensively with the history of mathematics under National Socialism , for example with Wilhelm Süss , the founder of the Mathematical Research Institute in Oberwolfach , and Gustav Doetsch ., And with the history of the publishing industry in the field of mathematics. He also worked on mathematics and astronomy in the early modern period, particularly iconographic and cultural-historical aspects and Jesuit scholars.
