Volker Hans Werner Schüler (* 1939 in Cologne ) is a German historian and local historian , book author , publicist and publisher . He was previously a journalist and radio editor . The focus of his work is the recent history of the Rhein-Erft district and the wider Erft and Rhineland .

Live and act

After leaving school, students studied at the universities in Göttingen and Tübingen . He initially began studying medicine , but then switched to the humanities and graduated in history , journalism and theater studies . Since 1960 he has been a member of the Corps Rhenania Tübingen .

After completing his studies, he worked for many years as a journalist, news editor and most recently as head of the service at radio , first from the late 1960s at Deutsche Welle , from 1970 at Deutschlandfunk in Cologne.

After he took early retirement in 1997 , Schüler concentrated more on his work as a local researcher and freelance writer . Based on his own research in the region's libraries and archives, Schüler produced a large number of publications, including both monographs and articles in specialist journals (see also the Literature section below). The main focus of the work was the recent history of the Erftland with the coming to terms with the Nazi past , the industrial history of the Rhenish lignite mining area , the expansion of the railway and canal network around Cologne, as well as the numerous historical mills in the region. For his research, Schüler worked closely with the archives in the Rhein-Erft district and the company archive of RWE Power (formerly Rheinbraun ). In addition to non-fiction books, Schüler also published a revised and expanded edition of a crime novel by the author Hans Blum from 1904 with a regional reference.

In order to publish some of his books, Schüler also worked as a publisher and founded the self-publisher Documenta Berchemensis Historica (DBH) . As part of the book series of the same name, Schülers Verlag also published works by other local historians in the region.

In addition to his work as a local researcher and author, Schüler volunteered in various local history and monument conservation organizations.

Honors

In 2003, Schüler was awarded the Rhineland Thaler by the Rhineland Regional Council for his voluntary work and his services as a local researcher .

In 2014, Schüler was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .

In addition to numerous articles in newspapers and magazines, Schüler wrote a number of specialist books. Most of these works were published by Sutton or in Schüler's own publishing house DBH . The student worked several times as an author with Gabriele Scholz, geb. Mohr (archivist of the Rhein-Erft district) and Manfred Coenen (archivist of RWE) together.
