He was the son of Count Ernst V. von Hohnstein (–1552) and Anna von Bentheim (–1559) and was a Protestant.

In 1562 he sold his manor Niedergebra to baron Christoph vom Hagen on Deuna through his chancellor Peter Böttcher .

On November 24, 1573, he entrusted Archbishop Daniel of Mainz to Archbishop Daniel of Mainz as a fiefdom in the Bleicheröder Treaty of Bodenstein Castle and Lordship with the associated court villages of Kaltohmfeld , Kirchohmfeld , Tastungen and Wehnde , although Braunschweig-Lüneburg claimed the overlordship. Protestant Germany was horrified at the surrender of a Protestant area to one of the main supporters of the Counter Reformation. This was the beginning of the decades-long disputes about this area on the edge of the Electoral Mainz Eichsfeld .

He was buried in the Walkenried monastery .
