List of cooperative banks in Germany

The Volksbank Oldenburg eG based in Oldenburg (Oldenburg) is a credit union with 13 locations in Oldenburg, in Ammerland , in Quakenbrück and in the Wesermarsch. The organs are the executive board , the supervisory board and the representative assembly .

history

At the beginning of 1903, the town of Oldenburg's craft guilds were asked to interest their members in the establishment of a credit cooperative in order to counter the generally prevailing credit problems in the craft. At the same time, the craftsmen who entered the lists were invited to the founding meeting on March 11, 1903. 37 Oldenburg craftsmen founded the Handwerker Spar- und Kreditskasse zu Oldenburg eGmbH. The new cooperative was entered in the cooperative register at the local court on May 15, 1903. After the necessary preparatory work had been completed, business operations began on June 15, 1903. At the end of 1903 the cooperative had 69 members and in its tenth year of existence there were already 387 members. Taking into account the business operations that have expanded over the years, the bank decided on August 13, 1919 to henceforth use the name Gewerbe- und Handelsbank eGmbH. In addition, the business area was expanded through the establishment of branches in Friesoythe (1920) and Brake (1926).

In 1941 it was decided to rename the bank Volksbank Oldenburg eGmbH. In 1951, Volksbank took over Volksbank Quakenbrück, which was founded in 1900. In 1953 a branch was opened in Oldenburg on Alexanderstraße and in 1956 the Raiffeisenbank Osternburg was taken over by merger. The steadily increasing demand for banking services was met by opening additional branches: 1966 in Bürgerfelde, 1967 in Kreyenbrück , 1967 in Eversten , 1971 in Bümmerstede and 1976 in Bloherfelde . In addition, the Raiffeisenbank Etzhorn merged with the bank in 1972. At the end of the 1972 financial year, Volksbank Oldenburg eG had 8,263 members.

In 2005 the Volksbank Oldenburg and the Volksbank Ammerland-Süd merged. In the merger year 2005 the balance sheet total was EUR 461 million. Of the approximately 42,000 customers, 15,806 were members.

The historic building of Volksbank Oldenburg eG

The building at Lange Straße 8/9 was built between 1906 and 1908 by the Deutsche Nationalbank, Bremen, based on a design by the Bremen architects Abbehusen & Blendermann and taken over by the Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse (AOK) in 1925 . Volksbank moved to its current location at Langen Strasse 8/9 on May 27, 1957, after an administration building had been built for the AOK in Gartenstrasse.

The bank building has a historic facade that was extensively renovated in 2003 for the Volksbank's centenary.

The facade is characterized by various reliefs. Especially the four lower figures on the mezzanine floor, which are almost at eye level, are very noticeable. Like the entire building, they and all the other reliefs on the facade are made of natural sandstone . The four reliefs form a cycle and represent the relationship to the Volksbank as one of the leading financial institutions in Oldenburg. They show, from left to right, a man holding a pickaxe in his left hand and a stone that he is examining in his right hand (“Check”), a bearded man with a balance (“Weighing”) as well as representations of the melting process (“Melting”) and the minting of money (“Coining”).

In the middle of the building, as the uppermost element of the facade, a young woman is enthroned allegorically, with arms outstretched to the sides, holding a protective wreath over the representations of industry (on the right from the viewer's perspective) and shipping (left). It is also flanked by the coat of arms of Bremen and Oldenburg.
