Volrad von Plessen (* May 1560 ; † September 10, 1631 in Leiden , Holland ) was an Electoral Palatinate Privy Councilor and Minister of State.

ancestry

He was the son of the Mecklenburg landowner Daniel von Plessen (* around 1530; † March 15, 1598 on his Steinhausen estate ) and the Magarethe von Plessen, born. von Krosigk († 1625 in Parin an der Pest).

Professional background

Volrad von Plessen was enrolled at the University of Greifswald and from 1578 at the University of Heidelberg . In 1578 he was elected councilor and chamberlain. He was later appointed to the Supreme and Privy Council and Minister of State. Among other things, he was ambassador to the Palatinate at the French royal court. Volrad von Plessen accompanied Elector Friedrich V of the Palatinate into exile in Holland. He was also known as the author of political writings, including "The Restitution of the Churhauses Pfaltz" (1629). During his time in Holland he became the tutor of Prince Karl Ludwig .

Family and death

In 1595, Volrad von Plessen Kunigundis married Charlotte von Leefdael, the daughter of Christopher von Leefdael and Mathilde von Schoonhoven. Charlotte died at the age of 31; its beautiful Renaissance epitaph can be found today in the choir of the Heidelberg Peterskirche . In his second marriage, Volrad von Plessen was married to Sibilla von Kettler after 1627. He was buried in Leiden at the St. Pancras Church . His tombstone is still in good condition there today.
