The Von der Tann was a 100-ton steam gunboat with three-masted schooner rigging built for the Schleswig-Holstein Navy in 1849 during the Schleswig-Holstein uprising (1848-1851) against Danish sovereignty at the Hilbert shipyard in Kiel . She was one of the first gunboats of the world, with propellers were driven.

history

The Von der Tann was associated with the Kiel shipyard founder and inventor of the "Maschinenbauanstalt Schweffel & Howaldt" August Howaldt developed, 36 hp (150 PSi ) strong steam engine with two horizontal steam boilers and so far only from the Lokomotivenbau known "artificial train" for vapor control fitted. The gunboat No. 1 of the Schleswig-Holstein flotilla was one of the first screw gunboats in the world and had a top speed of 6 knots under steam. The armament consisted of two rotating 60-pounders and four three-pounders. The ship was named after the later Bavarian general Ludwig von der Tann-Rathsamhausen (1815–1881), who, as chief of staff of the Bavarian-Hessian corps in Schleswig-Holstein, had decisively shaped the German militias in the duchies.

The Von der Tann was accepted by the shipyard on February 5, 1849 and then put into service. This year she took part in two battles at the northwest end of the Kiel Fjord near Bülk (May 11) and then near Neustadt in Holstein (June 17). In the fall of 1849, like the rest of the fleet, she was demobilized after an armistice came into force. After the completion of the Olomouc punctuation between Austria and Prussia on July 2, 1850, the fighting between Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein flared up again and the fleet was mobilized again.

The Von der Tann the Baltic Sea Division was assigned. After they have been in the Bay of Lübeck a Danish ship as a pinch had taken with this but not in the neutral to Luebeck belonging Travemünde was allowed to enter, she tried the port of Neustadt in Holstein reach. On the night of July 20-21, 1850, there was a battle with the Danish ships Hekla and Valkyrien in Neustädter Bucht . In the course of this, the Von der Tann ran aground in front of Neustadt and was abandoned by her crew under Commander Lange and set on fire. There was a serious explosion, but the damage was so minor that the ship could later be put back into service after repairs. In 1853, after the end of the war, it was taken over by the Danish Navy under the name Støren and decommissioned and scrapped in 1860.

SMS Von der Tann

A second ship with the same name, the large cruiser SMS Von der Tann of the German Imperial Navy launched in 1908 , was involved in the 1916 Skagerrak Battle .
