Ferdinand Lüder Arenhold (born May 7, 1854 in Soltau , † June 16, 1915 in Kiel ) was a German marine painter who was best known for his reconstruction paintings and drawings of the Imperial Fleet and the Prussian Navy .

Life

Hanseatic cog 1480

Arenhold probably joined the Imperial Navy at the beginning of the 1870s and left in 1881 as a lieutenant captain in the sea defense to work as a painter. He had also visited South America and China during his service . In Hamburg he took three years lessons from the painters Heinrich Leitner and Franz Johann Wilhelm Hünten , from 1886 to 1887 he was a master student of Hans Fredrik Gude at the Berlin Academy .

From 1887 he lived in Kiel, where he also owned a sailing yacht and had already participated in the first Kiel Week in 1882 as a regatta sailor. He was a co-founder of the Marine Regatta Association , later the Imperial Yacht Club . Arenhold preferred oil painting ; His subjects were primarily ships of the Imperial Navy and historical fleets, whereby he attached great importance to attention to detail, especially in technical matters, but also did not neglect geographical details.

Arenhold was particularly interested in the prehistory of the Imperial Navy, including the imperial fleet . His representations are considered the first attempts to reconstruct the appearance of the units, of which often only rough representations existed.

Nothing is known about his private life. He died at the age of 61 where he lived in Kiel.
