action
Maddalena returns to her homeland on the Italian island of Vulcano off the north coast of Sicily . Before that she had lived in Naples for 18 years , but was expelled from the city by the local customs police because of her immoral conduct. Most of the island's residents are hostile to the young woman because they know her past. They even prevent her from attending Holy Mass.
Maddalena soon meets her younger sister Maria, who was just a toddler when she last saw her, and her younger brother Nino, whom she had never seen. Maddalena would like to leave the island as soon as possible, but her conscience commands her to take responsibility for her inexperienced siblings. Maria made friends with Donato, a man of low disposition, who is said to be looking for sponges on the coast, but in truth a pot of gold. The longer Maddalena stays on the island, the more she realizes the danger that threatens her sister, especially since she used to be subject to the same temptation herself. After Donato went back down to the seabed in a diving suit, Maddalena seized what was supposed to be the last chance to save her sister from the crook: She let the pump wheel rotate more and more slowly until it stopped and the diver's breath was cut off.
At the place where the washed up body was found, the police discovered all sorts of documents that suggest that Donato was a wanted marriage swindler and girl trafficker. Thus Maddalena is considered rehabilitated. Maddalena does not learn anything about this; because when the volcano erupts again and destroys many buildings, Maddalena is buried under rubble.
