action

“Two friends want to stay awake as long as possible - without drugs. C. (Jana McKinnon) and Nike (Alli Neumann) are 17, but claim to be 20. You want out. Get out of the lack of perspective. You want to feel yourself. A pure experience. An intoxicating journey through 86 sleepless hours begins. C. and Nike film the experiment. Capture everything on your camera. But tiredness forces them back into reality. An end that is also the end of her youth.

Nike's dad is never home. The small apartment in a social housing estate is the perfect place for your experiment. You shop for several days. Tape up the windows and hide all the clocks in order to lose track of time. But when Nike's father turns up unexpectedly, it drives C. and Nike out. Out into the rainy ghetto. They are attacked on the street. You have to get out of here.

In the city, Nike is losing what little money they have with them. The girlfriends are about to break off. But they can't go home. You want to stay awake.

The cold of the night drives them to dark places in the city. A strange, deep world in which they have no business. They meet Jesco (Dennis Mojen) in a dark minimal club. He is a few years older and has a car. A road trip begins that confronts C. and Nike with their fears and dreams, puts their friendship to the test, and at the end of which it is a matter of life and death. "

Emergence

After seven years of unsuccessful efforts to finance his debut film, Kim Frank came up with the idea of making a low budget found footage film outside of the horror genre that is widespread in this category with a digital SLR camera and publishing it on YouTube. Wach was filmed in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein in March 2018. The film was produced on behalf of ZDF - Das kleine Fernsehspiel und funk . WACH (OST) was interpreted as the title song by Dat Adam .

Reviews

Jan Freitag praises Kim Frank in Der Tagesspiegel "[...] author, producer, director, editor and cameraman in personal union [...] shows [...] how you can get close to the youth even at the age of 36. In the company of well-known sidekicks by Alexander Scheer As a porn consumer through Hanno Kofler's street thugs to the bouncer of the pop star Lary, the main actresses in particular cause a sensation. [...] Swarmed by Philipp Schwär's precise soundtrack between technoid coldness and warmth from a western guitar [...]. All of this makes "Wach" a truly important film. Above all, it's a massive, wild, pleasantly insane and at the same time sensationally entertaining film. "

"" Wach "is convincing all along the way, is lively and really dares something," said Schayan Riaz in the Berliner Zeitung . "Fortunately, Frank has not made a film with educational know-it-all messages, but shows life unfiltered from the perspective of teenagers."

"The pace and subject matter are sometimes reminiscent of“ Victoria ”(2015), a film that, shot with a single camera position, shows a night through Berlin. Then there are faint echoes of“ We children from Bahnhof Zoo ”," wrote Swantje Kubillus in the Frankfurter Rundschau .

Jonas Leppin calls the film on Spiegel Online "a classic coming-of-age drama, an 86-hour road trip that is unconditionally evident every second." And praises: "Kim Frank has a great ability: He can create emotions in people. And he does that with" awake ""

"Kim Frank's debut film is different from the usual feature films, it comes terrifyingly close to reality," says Christoph Söller on Jetzt.de .

In Musikexpress Vanessa Sonnenfroh wrote. "[...] WAX fun and hurts alike drugs are cursed as a means of escape, saw real life as a potential high and the cold of the outside world shown seeping watching sport up by the screen [...] the one hand, WACH addressed to Generation Z, who inevitably have to find themselves in the two girls who are looking for them, on the other hand Frank's honest film acts as a mediator for the corresponding generation of parents. " We are your children", it says in the final monologue. "
