Wachau apricot is a protected designation of origin for apricots ( apricots ) in the area of the Wachau and some surrounding communities of Lower Austria .

The name "apricot" for apricots is already proven around the year 1509 in the Wachau. From 1890 the apricot was introduced there on a large scale as a productive fruit. Since then, apricot cultivation has traditionally been an important industry in this region. Originally, the large apricot trees with round crowns on one meter trunk gave the Wachau valley its typical appearance. Nowadays apricots are increasingly grown on shorter-stemmed trees with round or longitudinal crowns. The apricots are grown in spindle training less often, as the mechanization required for this is not possible everywhere in the Wachau. In 1995 the acreage was about 350 hectares.

After Wachau quality apricot became a protected designation of origin (PDO) in 1996 as a result of an application (EU regulation according to Art. 5 (17) No. 2081/92 - national application No. 1233.GR/95.) , This became in 2006 Wachau apricot shortened. In 2012 the regulations were changed again upon request. I.a. allowed since then apricot who are not from Integrated Production originate, and fruits with chemical pesticides have been treated, are provided with the PDO.

Since 2003, the "Original Wachau Apricot Association" has been trying to preserve and market this fruit that is typical of the Wachau. Labelling

The declaration can be used by any supplier whose apricots correspond to the shape described and come from the Wachau - Mautern - Krems growing area. Uniform packaging and labeling of apricots has not been described since 2012.

Wachau apricots are marked by members of the "Wachau apricot gU" association using boxes with a protected trademark. Members are obliged to only offer apricots from the club area in these boxes. The area of ​​the association also includes areas that do not belong to the Wachau.

Since the introduction of the PDO, further processing and sales of the Wachau apricots have increasingly taken place in the growing area itself, where today the majority of the harvest is sold directly on the farm and on the street .
