Headquarters in Nonnweiler-Otzenhausen

The Nestlé Wagner GmbH is a producer of frozen pizzas and other frozen products . The company, based in Nonnweiler in the Saarland, is one of the largest European providers of frozen pizzas. Nestlé has held all shares in the company since 2012 .

Company history

1969 to 1985

The trained master baker Ernst Wagner (1929–1999) founded Wagner Tiefkühlprodukte GmbH in 1969 . The company initially produced and sold frozen products in boilable bags , frozen chickens and high forest pan roast . Schnitzel variants were soon added to the product range . In 1971, the remote kitchen division was added, which supplied businesses in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate .

The company produced its first pizzas in 1973, inspired by the founding family's vacation in Italy . This product area grew steadily, especially after the remote kitchen division was discontinued (1979). In 1978 the company built a pizza production line with a shock freezer in its Braunshausen plant . The company built a production line in the same factory in 1982. At that time, 85 people worked for the company as permanent and 200 as part-time employees .

1985 to 1999

Continuous oven for pre-baking used today in industrial production

In 1985 the company put the first industrial stone oven into operation. The pizzas were pre-baked at high temperatures on hot volcanic stones. This made the pizza bases thin and crispy (“Original Stone Oven Pizza”). The company was represented at the Anuga for the first time in 1985 . A year later, the oven was further developed into a continuous stone oven.

Based on this stone oven and the associated expansion of capacity - in 1986 the company built another plant in Otzenhausen - it succeeded in becoming one of the leading manufacturers of frozen pizzas in Germany. In addition to the “Original Stone Oven Pizza”, from 1995 onwards, “American style” pizzas and from 1996 mini pizzas called “Original Piccolinis” also contributed. While the market share in the first half of 1992 was just under 17 percent, this value rose to over 27 percent in 1995. An important part of this is attributed to the development of the slogan , which focused on customer loyalty and increased brand awareness ("Once Wagner - always Wagner ”). In 1999 the company offered 650 jobs, making it the largest employer in the Nonnweiler community.

Since 2000

After the death of the company founder, his son Günter, his daughter Anette Hares and her husband Gottfried Hares took over the management of the company. The company continued to grow. In 2002 it employed over 1000 people.

In 2005 the food company Nestlé joined Wagner and took over 49 percent of the shares. Both partners were interested in significantly increasing exports. The two companies succeeded in doing this. At the beginning of 2010, Nestlé increased its stake in the company to 74 percent. The laying of the foundation stone for a new plant in the Münzbachtal industrial area in Otzenhausen took place in November 2011. At the time, the export quota was 36 percent. This plant was opened in August 2013.

Anette and Gottfried Hares decided to hand over the management of Wagner Tiefkühlprodukte GmbH in mid-2012 and to build a hotel on the Bostalsee. In May 2012, Thomas Göbel then moved to Wagner Tiefkühlprodukte GmbH and took over the chairmanship of the management in September 2012. At the beginning of the following year, Nestlé took over the company completely and changed its name to Nestlé Wagner GmbH. Thomas Ludsteck has been Chairman of the Management Board since June 2020.
