Pilgrimage Church of Maria Rast

The pilgrimage church Maria Rast is a much visited pilgrimage church in the area of the municipality Hainzenberg in the Zillertal in the Austrian state of Tyrol . It belongs to the parish of Zell am Ziller in the Archdiocese of Salzburg . The patronage is celebrated on July 2nd ( Visitation of the Virgin Mary ).

location

The church is located about 150 meters above Zell am Ziller in the Zillertal Alps in the former gold mining area of Hainzenberg. It can be reached via Gerlospassstraße (B 165). From Zell am Ziller a forest path leads past 14 stations of the cross to the pilgrimage church. Along the way there is a small grotto that was built by miners in 1870 . A few meters from the church is the "First Schoolhouse of Hainzenberg".

history

In 1659 the first dean of Zell am Ziller had the first Maria Rast church built on the Hainzenberg. According to other traditions, the church is known as the "Knappenkapelle", which was donated by the miners of the gold mine on Hainzenberg. The church, built at the time as a small wooden chapel, was replaced in 1738 by the pilgrimage church in its present form. In 1741 ceiling paintings were created with depictions from the life of the Mother of God Mary . The rococo altar was built in 1748. The consecration of the church took place in 1756.

In 1914, the underground of the church loosened as a result of a rock fall. The tower on the valley side and other components then had to be removed. The damage caused by the rock fall was repaired by September 1922 so that the furnishings could be returned to the church. In June 1923 the chapel was ceremonially consecrated. Part of the chapel still hangs securely over the abyss.

Furnishing

The rococo high altar with the miraculous image (statue of the Mother of God with baby Jesus) is flanked by Saint John Nepomuk , Saint Erasmus and eight angels. The side altars are dedicated to Saint Joseph and Saint Notburga (Tyrolean folk saints). The five painted church windows show the visit of Mary to Elizabeth (Visitation), Saint Aloisius with Our Lady and Baby Jesus, the crucifixion as well as John the Baptist and Saint James . The ceiling painting from 1741 shows four events from the life of Mary. The 14 Stations of the Cross are shown on the walls. In the church there are statues of Saint Blaise , Saint Christopher , Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Saint Barbara (patron saint of mining).

Say

Several legends exist in connection with the pilgrimage church.

Black spotted pigeon

One of the carpenters was seriously injured while building the church. A black-spotted dove carried the bloody wood shavings to another place. This was taken as a sign from heaven and construction began again where the church stands today.

Three white ravens

After felling a mighty beech tree on the Hainzenberg, the woodcutters discovered a picture of Mary in the roots. They decided to build a little church at the site. The next day three white ravens carried the image of Mary to the edge of the mountain. The workers took this as a sign from heaven and built the church there. Because the Blessed Mother found a resting place in the church, she was called "Maria Rast".

The toad on Maria Rast

The sacristan of the chapel often saw a big, ugly toad sitting in front of the door of the little church and always kicked it away. After she kept coming back, he let her in once. She has never been seen since. It is said that it was a penitent princess who suffered as an ugly toad until she was once allowed into the chapel.
