Life

Walo Koch was the son of a doctor. After primary and secondary school in Rorschach, he attended high school in St. Gallen , where he passed his Matura exam in 1916 . In the same year he began studying pharmacy at the ETH Zurich . In 1920 he passed the state examination as a pharmacist .

As early as 1917 he began studying the sociology of plants in the Lin Plain , which he continued for the next few years. After receiving his doctorate in 1926 as Dr. rer. nat. under the guidance of Carl Schroeter (subject: The vegetation units of the Linth plain ) he initially worked as a pharmacist.

In 1930 he got a job as a conservator at the herbarium of the ETH Zurich, from which in 1939 he was appointed associate professor for systematic botany and plant sociology. In addition to floristry and systematics, Koch worked on vegetation studies and thereby significantly promoted the methods of the then young plant sociology. Koch's estate includes herbaria of vascular plants and cryptogams .

Koch died on an excursion to the Bernina region during which he wanted to introduce his students to the flora of the Alps.
