Walter Büngeler

Walter Büngeler (born December 30, 1900 in Niedermendig , Rhine Province , † January 1, 1987 in Munich ) was one of the most important German pathologists.

Life

Büngeler studied medicine at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn , the University of Rostock and the new Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . With an obstetric doctoral thesis , he was awarded a Dr. med. PhD. Only two years later completed his habilitation he did in Frankfurt at Bernhard Fischer Wasels for pathology . With indole , he succeeded in chemically producing leukemia . In 1933 he was appointed founding dean of the Medical Academy in Gdansk . Three years later he followed the call of the Universidade Federal de São Paulo to the chair of the Escola Paulista de Medicina . There he wrote fundamental works on leprosy .

When Brazil declared war on the German Reich (under American influence) in August 1942 , he returned to Germany. He was a professor at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel for over 14 years . He was chairman of the scientific advisory board of the research center Borstel . The Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich appointed him to the fourth chair in 1956. He established departments for electron microscopy and neuropathology . He was Secretary General of the predecessor organization of the German Cancer Society . In 1970 he retired .

He was buried in the Westfriedhof (Munich) .
