Walter Benner (born October 4, 1912 in Eilendorf , † December 29, 2005 in Kelmis , Belgium ; full name Hugo Ernst Walther Benner) was a German glass painter .

Life

Benner studied from 1930 to 1933 at the Aachen School of Applied Arts and was a master student of the glass painter Wilhelm Rupprecht . From 1934 he worked as a freelance painter and technical draftsman.

In 1948, the first of its kind was the “Maria and John under the Cross” window for St. Martin's Church in Friesheim .

His most famous works are the windows of the Aachen Cathedral Choir , created between 1949 and 1951 . Together with Anton Wendling , he was commissioned in 1949 to redesign the glass windows in the choir hall that had been destroyed in the war. At around 27 meters, the tallest windows in Europe sparked heated discussions in the 1950s about the representability of Christian topics. Artistically, Benner, who painted figures, was based on models from the Middle Ages .

Walter Benner was married to the artist Marga Benner-Royé.
