Walter Carlein (born July 11, 1922 in Busenbach ; † August 24, 2011 in Weisenbach ) was a German politician ( CDU ). He was Lord Mayor of Baden-Baden from 1969 to 1990 .

Live and act

Walter Carlein was born the son of a teacher and graduated from high school in 1940. His plans to take up a degree in architecture failed in World War II , in which he participated as a pilot. Later he commanded his own squadron as an officer. After the end of the war, he began to study law and political science, and from 1948 philosophy . In the same year later he became a graduate economist. He wrote his dissertation in 1952 on the subject of "The taxation of municipal enterprises with special consideration of the concession fees". In 1954 he came to Baden-Baden as a lawyer . He joined the CDU in 1957. In the mid-1950s he was president of the SC Baden-Baden soccer club . In terms of local politics, Carlein took over the office of the City Councilor in 1957, while the lawyer took over the management of the Office for Public Order. He was particularly committed to environmental and noise protection. Mayor Ernst Schlapper named Carlein his successor at the end of the 1950s, but remained in his office for almost ten years. In 1968 Schlapper vacated his place in the town hall for reasons of age. In the following mayoral election, Trudpert Müller , who later became President of the Karlsruhe District , was Carlein's biggest opponent from his own party. After the successful election, Carlein took up his post as the new mayor on July 1, 1969.

In the year of his inauguration, Carlein managed to include the Baden-Baden City Clinic in the state's requirements plan and successfully prevent Baden-Baden from being connected to the Rastatt district . He also negotiated with the state to withdraw a reduction in the money from the casino tax and to send it to the spa and spa administration. In 1971 the Baden-Oos airfield , which existed until 1997, was expanded. A year later, Ebersteinburg , Steinbach , Neuweier and Varnhalt were incorporated under Carlein , and Sandweier followed three years later . Overall, the population of the city grew from before the incorporation of around 38,000 to almost 49,000 in 1975. In the following years he pushed the development of the city into a health resort, so he advocated the creation of a city and health resort development plan in the early 1970s . In 1973 Lange Straße was converted into a pedestrian zone. In the year of his first re-election in 1977 he was able to celebrate the opening of the city clinic, at that time one of the most modern hospitals in the country. A year later, the Autobahn church was inaugurated and the renovation of the Merkur Tower began . On April 27, 1979, the Merkurbergbahn was reopened after the renovation. In 1981 the State Garden Show took place in Baden-Baden on the one hand, and the eleventh Olympic Congress on the other . In 1985, Carleins was re-elected. It was followed by the start of construction on the Michaelstunnel , which began in 1986 and went into operation in 1989. In June 1990 he was adopted into retirement. In the years after his departure, he stayed out of politics as far as possible.

In addition, Carlein was chairman of the board of directors and the credit committee of what was then Stadtsparkasse Baden-Baden from 1969 to 1990. He was also a member of the main committee of the German Association of Cities (DST) and was chairman of the committee for medium-sized cities in the DST. His wife, with whom he had three children, died a few weeks before him.

Honors

On the occasion of his 60th birthday in 1982 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit with ribbon. In 1990 he became an honorary citizen of the city. Later he also received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class. He was also a holder of the French National Order of Merit (Commander) and Knight of the Cross of Constantinople.
