Walter Degen

Walter Degen (born October 24, 1904 in Bennwil ; † December 12, 1981 in Liestal , reformed , resident in Oberdorf ) was a Swiss politician ( BGB ) and veterinarian .

Life

Walter Degen was born on October 24, 1904 in Bennwil as the son of the farmer Traugott Degen and Wilhelmine nee Thommen. After attending grammar school in Basel , Degen began studying veterinary medicine in Bern , Zurich and Hanover , which he finished in 1928 with the state examination . In addition, Degen acquired the academic degree of Dr. med. vet.

Since 1929 Degen worked as a veterinarian in Sissach . To this end, he was employed as a cattle inspector and butcher in Sissach from 1931 to 1981 and as a cantonal veterinarian in Basel-Landschaft from 1949 to 1974 . Walter Degen led a successful fight against cattle abortion, bang and bovine tuberculosis in the 1950s and co-founded several animal breeding organizations.

In 1929 he married Rosa, the daughter of Fritz Schäublin from Waldenburg . Walter Degen died on December 12, 1981 at the age of 77 in Liestal.

Political career

As a member of the BGB, Degen was a member of the municipal council in Sissach from 1933 to 1948 . In addition, between 1938 and 1960 he was represented in the Basel district administrator , of which he was president from 1944 to 1945. He was also a member of the National Council from 1947 to 1955 and from 1959 to 1974 . He also acted as an administrative judge between 1960 and 1972 .

As a member of the Constitutional Council of both Basels, to which he was a member from 1960 to 1969, Walter Degen spoke out decisively against reunification. His political commitment was primarily to agriculture and animal welfare .
