Walter Hornstein

Walter Hornstein (born September 29, 1929 in Überlingen ; † September 18, 2012 ) was a German sociologist and educationalist .

Life

Hornstein attended elementary school and the Seuse high school for boys in Überlingen and, from 1946, the old-language grammar school Kolleg St. Blasien in the Black Forest. After graduating from high school in 1949, he studied philosophy and theology at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and then trained as a teacher at elementary schools. He worked for a few years in the Illmensee village school in the hinterland of Lake Constance.

From 1958 to 1963 he completed a second degree in pedagogy , German studies , sociology and psychology at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . After graduating as Dr. phil. and as assistant to Professor Andreas Flitner , he was appointed director of the German Youth Institute in Munich in 1967 and a little later became honorary professor for the sociology of life at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

From 1976 to 1995 he was Professor of Socialization Research and Social Pedagogy at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich. From 1995 to 2000 he held a teaching position for social education at the University of Zurich. Since 2000 he has been working on a multi-year project on the history and theory of youth policy in 19th and 20th century Germany.

Walter Hornstein lived in Gauting near Munich, was married and the father of four children.
