During his time in Hamburg, Walter Liese supervised more than 40 doctoral theses and 75 diploma theses . He has also worked as a visiting scientist and technical consultant with over 100 assignments in 30 countries worldwide. "Travel to developing countries to promote technical cooperation took Liese to so many countries that it would be easier to list the few that he has not yet visited," says Horst Schulz.

Scientific topics

Walter Liese researched a number of topics, especially the anatomy of wood and bark, wood quality, wound reactions of trees and tree care methods, micromorphology of wood destruction, physiology of wood-destroying fungi, wood protection and storage damage to round wood , bamboo and rattan with around 500 scientific publications 10 books as author and editor.

Since retiring in 1991, Liese has devoted himself primarily to research on bamboo, the “poor man's wood” and has traveled over 20 times to China , Costa Rica , Ghana , Colombia , Thailand , Vietnam , Malaysia , Indonesia and India, among others .
