Walter Lohmann (born May 28, 1861 in Milspe ; † February 15, 1947 in Weilburg ) was a German lawyer and national liberal politician .

Life

Lohmann studied law and political science in Bonn . In 1882 he joined the Alemannia Bonn fraternity . He graduated with a PhD. phil to his studies. In 1892 he became a court assessor . He had been a magistrate in Neumagen on the Moselle since 1890 . In 1897 Lohmann published a monograph on the Wage Act. In it he dealt with David Ricardo and Karl Marx , among others .

He belonged to the national liberal party and was a member of the central board between 1912 and 1917. From 1908 to 1918 Lohmann was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives . In this he was from 1916 to 1918 second vice-president. He was also parliamentary group leader of his party in 1917 and 1918. In 1918 he was one of the founders of the German People's Party .

In 1918 he acquired the Villa Reichenbach at Frankfurter Straße 15 in Weilburg (the former villa of Friederike Countess von Reichenbach-Lessonitz (born December 16, 1821 in Kassel; † February 23, 1898 in Weilburg) ⚭ November 3, 1841 Freiherr Wilhelm von Dungern (* June 20, 1809 in Weilburg; † July 3, 1874 in Wildbad). Friederike was one of several children of Emilie von Reichenbach-Lessonitz and Prince Elector Wilhelm II of Hessen-Kassel . See also List of Cultural Monuments in Weilburg ), which he lived in until his death. On November 17, 1918, in a public assembly of the Workers 'and Soldiers' Council of the Oberlahnkreis, its chairman Richard Hoin accused him of having spoken out against the same, secret and direct suffrage. Lohmann rejected this criticism and declared his support for a " bourgeois republic " if the monarchy was no longer possible.

On May 2, 1922, he led an electoral meeting of the DVP in Weilburg, at which General von Lettow-Vorbeck was the main speaker. Lohmann described his speech as a “hymn of praise to German male virtue and loyalty to duty”. In 1927 he demanded in a festive speech that the Reichswehr should not be politicized from either the left or the right. In 1931 he invited the DVP members in the Oberlahnkreis to take part in a celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the German Empire .

During the time of National Socialism , Lohman protested in 1938 against an inflammatory article that appeared in the Weilburger Tageblatt on November 11th, which insulted the Jewish people of Weilburg in the jargon of the " striker ". Lohmann then wrote a letter to the Weilburger Tageblatt in which he confessed to his Jewish friends and canceled the subscription ("After your newspaper has done this, I am no longer able to tolerate the Weilburger Tageblatt in my house."). The Weilburger Tageblatt then started a campaign against Lohmann himself, which resulted in anonymous threats and insults as well as the throwing of his window panes.
