Walter Lyman Upson (born July 3, 1877 in Cleveland , Ohio , † May 19, 1974 in Litchfield , Connecticut ) was an American electrical engineer and professor .

Life

Family and education

A native Clevelander Walter Lyman Upson, son of Civil War veteran Joseph Edwin Upson (1842-1933) and its spouse Cornelia Maria Lyman Upson (1846-1936), graduated from the local University School, wrote in the port at the Princeton University , There graduated he 1899 for a Bachelor of Science , in 1902 he received the Electrical Engineering Degree , in 1903 he acquired the degree of a Master of Science . After two semesters abroad in the departments of physics and engineering at University College in London , he got his first in 1908Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Harvard University .

Walter Lyman Upson married on August 20, 1906, Anna Leigh Richardson (1877-1967), also from Cleveland. This connection came from the sons Joseph Edwin and David Richardson. Walter Lyman Upson died in Litchfield , Connecticut , in the spring of 1974 just before the age of 97 .

Professional background

Walter Lyman Upson began his first position as an instructor in electrical engineering at Princeton University in 1904 , and in 1908 he moved to Columbus as Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Ohio State University . In 1910 he moved to Burlington , where he was appointed Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Vermont . In 1912 he followed a call as Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Union College in Schenectady , New York State , where he was appointed Associate Professor in 1914 . In 1920 he accepted the offer for the professorship of Electrical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis , he was also appointed head of the Electrical Engineering Department , and in 1938 he retired from university. Walter Lyman Upson was subsequently employed as Consulting Engineer for the Torrington Manufacturing Company in Torrington , as Vice President of Litchfield Water Company , Progress, Inc. and the Wolcott and Litchfield Lending Library .

Walter Lyman Upson, founder of the St. Louis Museum Science and Industry , Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers , Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Pi, emerged as the inventor of impellers .
