Walter Müller (General)

Walter Müller (born December 4, 1931 in Unseburg ) was major general of the NVA of the German Democratic Republic .

biography

After primary school, the son of a bricklayer was initially a laborer for a year before completing an apprenticeship as a coppersmith from 1947 to 1950. He then worked for a year as a coppersmith and burner before he was a student at the Institute for Teacher Training in Magdeburg from 1951 to 1952 . In 1952 he became a member of the SED and began his service in the armed organs of the GDR on August 11, 1952 as an officer student at the officers school in Erfurt . From 1954 to 1956 he was deputy company commander for technology and equipment in Panzer Regiment 1 and then graduated from a military academy in the USSR for four years . After his return from the Soviet Union , he was chief of staff of a tank battalion in Panzer Regiment 1 from 1960 to 1961 and then deputy head of the operational subdivision in the staff of the 1st Motorized Rifle Division in Potsdam for another year . Afterwards he was head of the operational sub-department there for four years, before he was deputy chief of staff and head of the operational sub-department in the command of the military district V Neubrandenburg from 1966 to 1970 .

He then attended the General Staff Academy of the USSR , which he graduated in 1972 as a graduate military scientist. After his return he was deputy commander and chief of staff of the 9th Panzer Division in Eggesin until 1976 . On November 1, 1976, as the successor to Major General Hans Sieg with the rank of colonel, he was appointed commander of the 7th Panzer Division in Dresden . In this function, he also took part in a delegation trip from the Ministry of National Defense to the ČSSR in the autumn of 1977 . On October 7, 1978, the 29th anniversary of the GDR's founding , he was appointed major general. On November 1, 1979, he was appointed Deputy Chief and Chief of Staff of Military District III in Leipzig . From 1982 until his release on June 30, 1984, he was in turn, as the successor to Major General Sieg, commander of the Land Forces Section at the Friedrich Engels Military Academy in Dresden.

In the course of his military career he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze and the battle medal “For Merit for People and Fatherland” in gold.
