Walter Odersky
Walter Odersky (born July 17, 1931 in Neustadt (Upper Silesia) , today Prudnik, Poland ) is a German lawyer and was the successor to Gerd Pfeiffer from 1988 to 1996 President of the Federal Court of Justice .
Life
Walter Odersky was born as the son of the later Vice President of the Regional Court Felix Odersky. In Breslau he attended the Maria Magdalenen grammar school until 1945 . After the family had come from Silesia to Bavaria at the end of the Second World War and he had graduated from high school in Schwandorf , he studied law in Munich and Pisa as a scholarship holder of the Bavarian Maximilianeum Foundation for gifted students . During his studies he became a member of the Catholic student association K.St.V. Albertia Munich in KV . In 1954 he was at the University of Munich a doctorate in law doctorate .
After working as a public prosecutor and judge in the ordinary courts , he was personal assistant to the minister in the Bavarian State Ministry of Justice and head of the criminal law department from 1971 to 1983. He was appointed President of the Bavarian Supreme Court in 1983 and President of the Federal Court of Justice in 1988. When he retired in 1996, Karlmann Geiß became his successor.
In addition to his work in judicial administration and justice, Walter Odersky continued to work scientifically in research and teaching. The University of Munich appointed him honorary professor for civil law, commercial and economic law and procedural law in 1974. On June 7, 1996 Odersky received the Great Cross of Merit with Star and Shoulder Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
