Walter Schmitz (General)

Walter Schmitz (born September 23, 1934 in Berlin ) is a German officer, most recently Lieutenant General in the Bundeswehr .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1956, Schmitz joined the armed forces as an evening schoolboy. He went through officer and aviation training . In 1957 he was promoted to lieutenant . He was initially a flight test officer and instructor ( T-33 , G91 , F-104 ), fighter-bomber pilot and squadron operations officer. He then became a squadron commander, deputy commander and commander of the flying group. He was also an assistant at the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg) in Bonn. Schmitz then attended Air Command and Staff College (ACSC) at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. As a colonel(from 1975) from 1975 to 1977 he was commodore of Jagdgeschwader 74 "Mölders" in Neuburg an der Donau ( Phantom F-4F ).

In 1977 he was promoted to brigadier general. As General Aviation Safety, Schmitz was responsible for investigating aircraft accidents in the German Armed Forces from 1977 to 1980 . He was then commander of the German Air Force Command USA / Canada in El Paso / Texas . From 1983 to 1985 the major general was commander of the 4th Air Force Division in Aurich . Then he was in command of the 4th Allied Tactical Air Fleet in Heidelberg. From 1987 to 1989 he served as lieutenant general bureau chief of the Air Force Office (LWA) in Cologne-Wahn . From 1989 to 1991 he was the commanding general in the air fleet command in Cologne. He then retired.

He is Catholic, married and has two children.
