Hanns Heise (* 1. February 1913 in Treuenbrietzen ; † 18th May 1992 in Cologne ) was a German officer , a fighter pilot in World War II and later Brigadier General of the Air Force of the Armed Forces .

Prewar years

Heise joined the Reichsmarine as an officer candidate on April 1, 1934 , where he received his basic training in the 2nd ship trunk division of the Baltic Sea in Stralsund . After attending the officers' course at the Mürwik Naval School from June 1934 to the end of March 1935 and subsequent infantry training, Heise, an ensign at sea since July 1, 1935 , came to Pillau on October 1, 1935 as a platoon leader in the V Naval Training Department . There he was promoted to lieutenant at sea on April 1, 1936 .

In the same year he switched to the Air Force . There Heise completed his training as a pilot at the pilot schools in Celle , Ludwigslust and Tempelhof and at the Air War School in Berlin-Gatow by 1936 . After completing this training, Heise was transferred to the 1st squadron of Kampfgeschwader 155 as a technical officer , one of the predecessor squadrons of Kampfgeschwader 55 . In 1938 he was transferred to the First Group in Combat Squadron 76 as a group technical officer .

Second World War

Heise, who had been promoted to lieutenant on February 1, 1939 , took part in the attack on Poland and the campaign in the west with this squadron . He then flew numerous attacks on southern England as part of the Battle of Britain . In June 1940 Heise became a squadron captain, and as such he took part in numerous enemy flights in the area of Army Group Center after the start of the Eastern campaign on the Eastern Front , and later also in the area of Army Group South . Most recently he flew in Kampfgeschwader 76 from November 1942 to May 1943 as commander of Group IV. He was promoted to major on February 1, 1943 , and on May 9, 1943 Heise was appointed commodore of Kampfgeschwader 51 , which he commanded on the Eastern Front until January 1944.

From February to April 1944 he was commodore of Kampfgeschwader 2 , which flew attacks against southern England ( company Steinbock ) and shipping traffic in the English Channel from northern German, Dutch, Belgian and northern French airfields . After being promoted to lieutenant colonel on May 1, 1944 and briefly employed as a stage manager with General der Kampfflüger from June to August 1944, Heise was appointed commodore of Kampfgeschwader 40 in September 1944 , which he led on the western front until December 1944 . In February 1945 Heise took over Kampfgeschwader 30 as a commodore . When, towards the end of the war, due to the acute shortage of fuel, no more major air attacks could take place, Heise commanded an air force battalion in ground combat. On May 8, 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Allies , from which he was released in July 1947.

Post-war years and career in the Bundeswehr

After his release from captivity, Heise initially worked as a technical merchant until December 1948, then as a general agent in 1949 and as a travel agent from December 1949 to February 1954. From March 1954 to the end of January 1956 he was deputy head of department at Osram in Munich . On February 1, 1956, Heise joined the Bundeswehr Air Force with the rank of lieutenant colonel . After completing a course for testing officers, he served as testing officer from February 16 to August 3, 1956. From August 4, 1956 to the end of October 1956, he was commander of the pilot school in Memmingen ; in this position he was promoted to colonel on September 1, 1957 . From November 1956 to the end of July 1962 Heise was the German representative at AIRBOARD / MAS in London . From August 1962 to September 1968 Heise was stage manager for flight safety in the Air Force Office in Cologne-Wahn , where he was promoted to brigadier general on November 1, 1967 . In October 1968 he was delegated to Fort Bliss ( USA ), where he served as the commander of the German aerial training command until the end of September 1971. On September 30, 1971, Heise retired.
