Lothar Schmidt (General)

Lothar Schmidt (born December 10, 1949 in Hahnenbach ; † April 15, 2020 in Ellenz-Poltersdorf ) was a German officer most recently in the rank of Brigadier General of the Bundeswehr . He was General Aviation Safety from 2006 to 2011 .

Life

On July 1, 1970, Lothar Schmidt joined the Bundeswehr. After completing his basic military training and officer training at the Luftwaffe officers' school in Neubiberg , he was trained in aviation in the United States . Schmidt was trained on the aircraft types Cessna T-37 , Northrop T-38 and Lockheed F-104 "Starfighter". After completing his aeronautical training, he was deployed with Fighter Bomber Wing 33 . There he found until 1984 using as a starfighter pilot, operations officer and operations staff officer in the first  season .

This was followed by a position as a department head for exercises in the air fleet command in Cologne and from 1988 to 1989 training as an officer in the general staff service at the French military academy in Paris . In 1992 he became commander of the flying group of Fighter Bomber Wing 31 and from 1995 to 1998 he led Fighter Bomber Wing 33 as a commodore . Subsequently followed by several uses in higher command authorities , NATO - bars and the Ministry of Defense .

In June 2006 he was appointed General Aviation Safety in the Bundeswehr while being promoted to Brigadier General. Schmidt retired on January 1, 2012 .
