Walter Schuberth (born April 1, 1950 in Straßdorf ) is a former German soccer player who played a total of 104 games in the 2nd Bundesliga South and scored 20 goals.

career

Schuberth took his first steps as a footballer in his place of birth as a player in the youth department of SV Straßdorf. There the neighboring club SV Schwarzenbach / Wald became aware of the young Schuberth and signed him for the regional league team of the Upper Franconian club. Schuberth introduced himself splendidly at SV Schwarzenbach / Wald and was top scorer in all of his 3 seasons with over 30 goals each.

Schuberth was soon called up for the German Armed Forces in Bayreuth and played in the selection team of the “Jäger des Bataillon 102” together with regional celebrities such as Walter Pradt and Wolfgang Breuer . The “Bayreuth Jäger” were - thanks in part to Schuberth - very successful at that time and so Schuberth attracted the attention of larger clubs such as FC Bayern Hof , 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 and 1. FC Nürnberg . In the end, it was TSV 1860 Munich in the person of coach Hans Tilkowski who came to Schuberth after a defeat in a test match against the "Bayreuth Jäger" and signed them shortly afterwards for the 1972/73 season.

"Wanze" Schuberth - as he was called in 1860 - remained loyal to the "Löwen" for four years and played 84 league games for the club during this time. However, it was not until his second season in 1860 that Schuberth was able to get stuck in the extended circle of the regular eleven and regularly come to his missions. Schuberth was on the field on August 15, 1973 when at least 80,000 spectators attended a 1-1 draw against Helmut Haller's FC Augsburg , thus creating a record number of visitors in the Munich Olympic Stadium . During his time in Munich in 1860, under coaches such as Elek Schwartz , Rudi Gutendorf or Max Merkel, he repeatedly failed to get promoted to the Bundesliga and always ranked between third and fifth place in the final ranking. The longed-for promotion was only to be achieved in the 1976/77 season under Heinz Lucas , but at that time Schuberth had already switched to the Rheinhessen club VfR Wormatia Worms .

There Schuberth celebrated a promotion in the 1976/77 season, namely that of the Amateur League Southwest in the 2nd Bundesliga South . With 10 goals in 26 games, Schuberth was an important factor in the promotion campaign in his debut season at Wormatia. In the promotion round following the regular season, TuS Neuendorf and Borussia Neunkirchen were the opponents, Schuberth played all 4 games and scored the important equalizer to the final score of 1: 1 in the penultimate game at TuS Neuendorf. Wormatia Worms established itself with Schuberth as a regular player in the 2nd Bundesliga South and even fought for promotion to the Bundesliga in the 1978/79 season. During the winter break, however, Eckhard Krautzun , Niels Poulsen and Thomas Zander switched to TSV 1860 Munich - partly due to financial problems in the wake of the "Heyn affair" , which put a severe damper on the Worms' hopes for promotion. Schuberth did not last long in Worms either. During the 1978/79 season he moved to the North American Soccer League at Houston Hurricane , after he had previously turned down offers from England and Spain.

In the USA, the opponents were then, among others, Franz Beckenbauer or Pelé and Houston's team was peppered with legionnaires. Schuberth played with the Finn Kai Haaskivi , the Yugoslav Nino Zec , the Argentinian Eduardo Marasco and his compatriot Horst Bertl . Schuberth didn't need a long time to get used to in Texas and was an important part of the team's midfield. In his debut season, he scored five goals and eleven assists in 27 appearances, earning him the title of best Texas midfielder. Houston Hurricane reached the play-offs for the American championship this season , but failed in the first round to Philadelphia Fury . However, Schuberth's time in the USA was also characterized by repeated knee injuries. The second cruciate ligament rupture finally prompted the man from Strasbourg to break up his tents in Texas and return to his Bavarian homeland.

There he let his career end, first as a player at VfB Coburg and then as a player-coach at various lower-class clubs. After various coaching positions in the amateur field and a break of several years, Schuberth was presented as part of a coaching duo for the 2011/12 season at DVV Coburg. In addition, Schuberth has been an amateur referee for years.
