Walter Strolz

Walter Strolz (born November 17, 1927 in Schoppernau ( Vorarlberg )) is an Austrian publisher, writer and philosopher. He is a great-grandson of Franz Michael Felder and a nephew of Franz Michel Willams .

Life

In 1943 Strolz was drafted into the Wehrmacht . He was finally released from the front with a hand bullet. After the Second World War he was at the Mehrerau Commercial Academy in Bregenz until 1948 . However, he passed his matriculation examination at the Federal High School in Bregenz. He then began to study German , philosophy and history in Innsbruck . He wrote his dissertation in 1954 on the subject of "Holderlin and the job of the poet".

Between 1954 and 1958 Strolz worked as an editor at Tyrolia Verlag in Innsbruck. The first essays and reviews from his pen on philosophical and religious questions also fall during this period. After he had sent the manuscript of his first book “The Forgotten Origin” in 1959 to the Herder publishing house in Freiburg im Breisgau , he received an offer to publish the work as well as the editor-in-chief of the publishing house, which he did exercised from 1959 to 1964. In 1965 his second book “Being human as a question of God” was finally published, in which he devoted himself to the evidence of God in modern metaphysics . Strolz's considerations exerted great fascination on the existential philosopher Martin Heidegger , which is also borne out by the intensive correspondence that followed between 1965 and 1974. From 1965 to 1970 he was scientific director of the dialogue company of the Herder publishing house. Ultimately, he put his main focus on ecumenical and intercultural philosophy throughout his life. From 1970 to 1992 Walter Strolz was a permanent employee of the NZZ , where he primarily wrote essays and reviews - u. a. about poetry, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Martin Heidegger and William Shakespeare . Furthermore, essays by Strolz were published in “Herder-Korrespondenz”, “ Rheinischer Merkur ”, “ Die Welt ” and other magazines. He published the autobiographical work of Franz Michael Felders with the title “From my life” in 1974. In 1988 he left the Herder publishing house, which is why he returned to Innsbruck with his wife, where he worked as a freelance writer from then on. He finally left his legacy to the Vorarlberg State Library in 2004 . Walter Strolz has lived in Vienna with his family since 2008 .
