Walter Wakenhut

Walter Wakenhut (born September 17, 1942 in Burghausen ) is a German priest of the Diocese of Passau and was military vicar general in Germany until October 31, 2013 .

Life

After attending elementary school and high school from 1948 to 1962, he entered the St. Stephan seminary and studied Catholic theology in Passau. He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1968 .

After working as a chaplain in the Hacklberg district of Passau , he was prefect from 1969 to 1972 and then until August 31, 1980 director at the Episcopal Study Seminar St. Altmann in his home town of Burghausen. At the same time he was a religion teacher at the Kurfürst-Maximilian-Gymnasium there .

On September 1, 1980, he was appointed pastor of St. Michael in Regen ( Bavarian Forest ) by Bishop Antonius Hofmann . From 1983 to 1985 he was the dean of schools for the Regen dean's office and was elected dean on June 1, 1985. Since September 1, 1986 he was also a part-time Catholic pastor at the Bundeswehr base ( garrison ) in Regen.

After completing his active service as military vicar general, Wakenhut was appointed clerical representative of the state committee of Catholics in Bavaria . He has been in this position since January 2014. He is a member of the Presidium, the Executive Committee and the General Assembly as a voting member and is therefore closely involved in the decision-making processes of the State Committee . On March 16, 2016, Wakenhut was appointed head of the parish of St. Martin in Zorneding for the period "until autumn 2016" . This transition period ended on August 31, 2016. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Federal Academy for Security Policy .

Career in military chaplaincy

On November 1, 1989 he became the Catholic pastor of Hamburg III - Leadership Academy of the Bundeswehr . On 18 February 1990, he was appointed chaplain and on 1 March 1991 for military Dean . On March 16, 1993, Wakenhut was transferred to the Catholic Military Bishop's Office and entrusted with the performance of the official business of Section Head II - Personnel and Organization. He became Deputy Military Vicar General.

On March 23, 1995 he received the papal honorary title of monsignor from Pope John Paul II and in 1997 that of a prelate .

From 1997 to 2000 he held the office of Catholic Military District Dean VI in Munich. During this time he was also active in pastoral care (pastor of St. Michael in Arget (1997-2003)).

On October 31, 2000, Bishop Walter Mixa appointed him military vicar general to the Catholic military bishop .

On September 17, 2007 he received from Pope Benedict XVI. the honorary title Apostolic Protonotar supra numerum , the highest level of papal honorary title.

After Pope Benedict XVI. on May 8, 2010 accepted Walter Mixa's offered resignation, the vicar general of the Catholic military bishop, the apostolic protonotary Walter Wakenhut, took over the management of the Catholic military chaplaincy in accordance with the requirements of church law. As a new Catholic military bishop, Franz-Josef Overbeck was appointed by the Holy See in 2011 in accordance with the requirements of the Reich Concordate of 1933 (Article 2 of the Papal Statutes).

On November 1, 2013, Walter Wakenhut handed over the post of military vicar general to Reinhold Bartmann , who comes from the diocese of Regensburg .
