Biographical

Walther Roggenkamp was born on September 18, 1926 in Ulm. He had to break off his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart in 1943 because of his military service. To a convening the Waffen-SS to escape, he volunteered for the Navy . After a short English captivity , he continued his studies with the painter Julius Hebing . Here he dealt intensively with Goethe's and Steiner's theory of colors . The young, budding artist discovered the greats of classical modernism , such as Braque , Chagall , Picasso and others, who were considered degenerate in Germany until the end of the war . He also got to know artists from the painting circles of the time, including Felix Goll , Renate Wolffhügel and Margarita Woloschin . After one and a half years of studying with Julius Hebing, Roggenkamp was certain that creative intuitions could not arise from color theory alone, as his teacher wanted to convey, and he separated from him.

After a short time he gave up his own advertising company, which he ran with two friends, in order to give room to his desire for a more meaningful job. He found this in 1949 as a stage helper at the Goetheanum and in further studies with Henni Geck . Through them he got to know Rudolf Steiner's training sketches for painters , in which he saw an essential but not easy to decipher painterly potential hidden. Activities as a stage painter and lighting technician followed.

In 1956 he began his lifelong collaboration with the Weleda medicinal products company , for which he designed the annual calendar, designed advertising materials and took care of the picturesque design of the company premises. In addition, he created designs for large tapestries (woven by Hildegard Osten ) and large-scale ground glass pictures for various institutions and created many book illustrations . Walther Roggenkamp made use of all conceivable design means, such as pencils and colored pencils, chalk, Indian ink, watercolor, tempera and oil paint, charcoal, wool and silk, glass, wood, concrete, stone carving. He developed and designed fonts , signets and logos for many companies and institutions . Between 1970 and 1980 he designed sets for the Faust Festival in Dornach, for Goethe and Schiller dramas and for many other performances on various stages in Europe.

In 1992 Walther Roggenkamp fell seriously ill and died on July 9, 1995 in Ruchenschwand / Dachsberg municipality in the southern Black Forest .
