The Wandelhalle Eisenach is a prestigious building that was opened in 1906 and was built for the health spa at the Kartausgarten and Wartburgallee in Eisenach , in western Thuringia . At the time, Eisenach was striving to become a nationally important health resort - but the health resort only lasted from 1906 to 1938.

A foundation with the same name aims to preserve and use the foyer permanently.

history

The Grand Duchess - Karolinen - Quelle in Wilhelmsglücksbrunn near Creuzburg has been known as a saline healing spring for centuries. The source got its name in memory of Caroline , Grand Duchess of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach , who died in 1905 at the age of 20 . At the end of the 19th century, the spring was officially recognized and protected as a healing spring .

On September 13, 1905, the owner of Saline and Burg Creuzburg, Kommerzienrat Niclaus von Dreyse, together with the city of Eisenach and six other partners founded the Kurbad-Eisenach-Gesellschaft , which acquired the rights to use this mineral water source. They initiated the construction of their own, around 14 kilometers long water pipe exclusively for this sodium chloride sulfate water from its source at Wilhelmsglücksbrunn to Eisenach. Spa facilities were planned to use the Hotel Fürstenhof as a spa house, as well as the construction of an open drinking and foyer south of the city center near the up-and-coming villa district in Eisenach's southern district at the Kartausgarten , the park based on the English model, which thus became a spa park . A Carthusian monastery was located on the site from 1378 until the Reformation .

On July 8, 1906, the spa was opened by Grand Duke Wilhelm-Ernst . However, a long-term spa operation with profitable results could not be achieved - and so after almost 32 years the spa operation was discontinued on March 31, 1938. According to a report by the German Foundation for Monument Protection in 2019, the reason was the economic downturn as a result of the First World War . After 1945 the foyer was occasionally used for concerts and there were film screenings in the summer. In 1965 the roof collapsed in two places. For the 900th anniversary of the Wartburg in 1967, the foyer was examined structurally. Their condition was bad, so that the building had to be secured for a short time, but after these emergency repairs the building fell into disrepair. The main reason was obviously the shortage economy in the GDR. After the Peaceful Revolution in the GDR , finances and materials were available for renovation. However, there was still a lack of suitable use. Graffiti and vandalism repeatedly caused unsightly spots and damage to the hall.

In the summer of 1998, Eisenachs Verkehrsverein presented a usage concept for the foyer. The next steps were the establishment of the Wandelhalle Eisenach Foundation in 2001 and the gradual renovation of the building. In 2004, work began on the facade, the redesign of the outdoor facilities and the construction of a new drainage system. In 2017, the originally existing terrazzo panels were largely restored true to the original. Since the renovation, the foyer and the adjacent park have been used for events, concerts and exhibitions.

architecture

The foyer was designed below the “Fürstenhof” hotel. Johannes Bollert from Dresden, a former employee of the architect Hermann Thume , won the architectural competition organized for this purpose . Its sublime-looking structure consists of a large, symmetrical hall with a central and two side pavilions . The baroque building has modeled jewelry made of Elbe sandstone and stylized plaster ornaments. The “frozen water” motif on the pillars , pillars and cornices is taken from Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann's terrace design for the Dresden Zwinger .

On the long street front along the Wartburgallee is the large pavilion, the porch of which was used as a well. Flatter halls with upstream shops and open arcade wings lead to the side pavilions. Two short side wings create a square U-shape with the main wing and thus create an interior space with the music pavilion as the center.
