The Wangauer Ache is an approximately 12 km long tributary of the Mondsee in Upper Austria .
It rises at around 1000 m in the Kulmgraben north of the Kulmspitze in the flysch zone in a forest area. Initially it runs north and quickly loses altitude. North of Oberwang it turns 180 ° and flows in a wide valley to the south, from Innerschwand on Mondsee in a south-west to west direction. At Loibichl it flows into the Mondsee after about 12 km, where it has raised a small alluvial cone . The estuary is only 3 km as the crow flies from the source.
The valley through which the Wangauer Ache flows to the south continues beyond a valley watershed formed by a moraine to the north. In this section it is traversed by the Ruezingbach, a spring stream of the Dürren Ager to the north.
In the settlement and bridge area, the Wangauer Ache is mostly straightened and fortified. In some places, especially south of Oberwang, near-natural meanders , wet meadows and remains of the alluvial forest with beech , ash and sycamore maple have been preserved. The lower reaches of the Wangauer Ache from Loibichl is regulated and hard-built. There, the river continuum is interrupted by numerous transverse structures. At Loibichl, the water is used for energy by a diversion power plant. A 50 m wide strip on both banks is designated as a bank protection zone, in which any interference with the landscape and the natural balance is prohibited.
The lower reaches of the Ache are used by fish from the Mondsee, especially the sea pigeon ( Alburnus mento ), as a spawning area. Furthermore, as in the Mondsee, there is a large population of the introduced signal crab .
