Why are they against us? is a German feature film from 1958. The critically acclaimed strip marked the directorial debut of the actor Bernhard Wicki .

action

Günter is 20 years young, an unskilled worker with a proletarian family background and has found a job in a foundry . He spends his free time with some buddies from the motorcycle club, with whom he has formed a clique called “The Gentle”. All of your lives are the “fire chairs” and loud, modern music. His family environment makes Günter shudder because of the feeling of coldness. The working-class son feels much more comfortable around the only slightly younger Gisela. The employee, who moves more in artistic circles, is the daughter of an authorized representative . Günter feels understood by her. For her sake, he even neglects his life with his clubmates.

Gisela's parents, on the other hand, do not seem to Günter to be good enough, they disapprove of their daughter's contact, which is regarded as “not befitting”. She tries to make Günter attractive to her parents by bringing him home one day without prior notice and introducing him to the parents, in the hope that her two producers will be convinced of Günter's decent character. But what was intended as an "icebreaker" got completely out of hand after a loud and insulting argument between the young man and Gisela's father. Günter runs away frustrated, the question is in the room: "Why are you against us?" The currently blossoming relationship between the two young people is in great doubt, and Günter returns to his world, to his buddies with their motorcycles and the music bars.

Reviews

“The film is deliberately provocative in many details, but it is precisely because of this that it forces reflection and discussion. He speaks unobtrusively to the conscience of both youth and adults, without having an answer ready for every question. (...) In this, his first film, which Wicki was able to make without commercial considerations, he shows that he is an idiosyncratic and promising director. "

- Stuttgarter Zeitung of January 22, 1959

“The fable is straight forward like that of a short story. It tells of the short, unfulfilled encounter between two young people who are torn apart by the circumstances. "

- Theodor Kotulla in film review 1/1959

“A year before his sensational anti-war film Die Brücke (1959) hit a completely new note in German cinema in the 1950s, Bernhard Wicki (1919–2000), who was already famous as an actor, made his small but highly remarkable debut film Why Are They Against us? in front. Wicki's film answers the wave of thugs at that time, in which the rebellion of young people was always accompanied by crime and sexual instincts, in a thoughtful way: Here, too, it's about a clique, about motorcycles and consumer fantasies. But already the film title Why are they against us? signals that speculative curiosity is not satisfied, but rather the view of the protagonists themselves is presented. The fact that the film was made on an initiative of the Institute for Film and Image in Science and Education may arouse suspicion, but Wicki also succeeded in setting new stylistic accents and combining documentary and fictional elements. The always mobile, occasionally playful camera work by Gerd von Bonin, a former documentary filmmaker who also photographed Die Brücke, worked with Will Tremper and produced Roland Klick's first short film, is particularly unusual. "

- Zeughaus Kino: Papa's cinema?

"The camera is operated sensitively and ambitiously - and you can forgive it if it occasionally" ignores "prominent film examples."

- BAG film reviews 27

“Wicki's impressive documentation of contemporary youth problems at the end of the 50s. As part of a game, the tense and disturbed relationship between two young people and the adult world is examined. The open outcome is consciously factored in as a discussion incentive. "
