What's up!? was a daily updated YouTube news channel for a youth audience operated by Mediakraft Networks .

General

The news channel presented daily news and information from all over the world to a young audience that traditional media can no longer reach. News that had been researched by the editorial team was processed in video form, the selection of topics was based on current political events, and viewers were able to give their feedback and opinions directly through ratings and comments. The makers saw their target group in the 13 to 21 year olds. The video clips were presented by changing moderators against a red background, their length was mostly around five minutes. The magazine Stern rated the clips of the channel as “solid like“ Tagesschau ”or“ heute ”, only presented more casually, not as stiff in language and significantly faster due to the video editing”.

What's up!? and new formats of youth journalism were the subject of a research symposium on media studies at the University of Trier in February 2015 and at the Medienforum NRW in June 2015.

The channel was produced in a studio in Berlin until the end of 2014 , after which production was relocated to Cologne . On October 1, 2015, the Mediakraft Networks channel was discontinued.
