Wasserburg (Inn) Bahnhof is now the only train station in the former district town of Wasserburg am Inn . It is a separation station on the main line from Rosenheim to Mühldorf ; The Grafing – Wasserburg branch line branches off at it . The operator of the three-track, non-electrified station and the connecting lines is DB RegioNetz Infrastruktur GmbH as part of the Südostbayernbahn .

history

On May 1, 1876, the Rosenheim – Mühldorf railway was opened. For topographical reasons, Wasserburg could not be directly connected to the railway line. Instead, the city was accessed via the Reitmehring train station - today Wasserburg (Inn) train station - which is about four kilometers from the city center.

On November 6, 1899, the station was upgraded to a hub by the railway line from Grafing Bahnhof to Ebersberg. Around four years later, on September 27, 1903, the branch line to Wasserburg Stadt was opened.

The "Wasserburger Altstadtbahn" from Wasserburg train station to Wasserburg city was shut down in May 1987 due to a dam slide. On February 12, 2016, the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior, Construction and Transport issued a decommissioning notice for the Wasserburg old town railway. A consortium formed by BayernBahn , Rhein-Sieg-Eisenbahn , Innrail and the passenger association Pro Bahn filed an objection, and the Munich Administrative Court dismissed the lawsuit on January 9, 2017. In January 2018, however, the appeal was approved by the Bavarian Administrative Court. However, this trial also failed.

Track plan of the Wasserburg (Inn) train station

Between the bus station in the center of the village, where the Wasserburg Stadt station used to be, the city bus to and from Reitmehring runs for the most part every hour. The station has three platform tracks. The eastern track, track 1, is served every hour by the Filzenexpress from Grafing or Munich, which ends here . The trains to Rosenheim stop on platform 2, those to Mühldorf on platform 3. Wasserburg serves as an hourly crossing station for the trains on the Rosenheim – Mühldorf railway line. The station was modernized in 2016, since then the platforms have been completely barrier-free; however, the trains of the DB class 628 cannot be entered without climbing steps.
