Vasily Andreevich Karatygin ( Russian Василий Андреевич Каратыгин / Vasilij Andreevič Karatygin; born March 10, 1802 in Saint Petersburg ; † March 25, 1853 ibid) was a Russian theater actor and translator of mainly French plays. Belinski praised the mimes in the highest tones: Karatygin's game is a celebration of theatrical art.

Wassili, son of the actor couple Andrei Karatygin (1774–1827) and Alexandra Karatygina (1777–1859), began training as a foreign trade merchant. Sometimes pieces were rehearsed at home. On such an occasion, the 15-year-old Vasily came under the influence of two dramaturges - the theater director Alexander Schachowskoi (1777–1846) and the poet, literary critic and translator Pawel Katenin (1792–1853). Schachowskoi wanted to turn the boy into an actor and taught him the pompous style of play of that time. Vasili felt more drawn to Katenin. The latter drew the boy's attention to the works of the Greek and also more recent French classics. Vasily Karatygin's Petersburg debut on May 3, 1820 on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater in a role in the tragedy Fingal von Oserow (1769-1816) was a success. Romanticism reached the Russian stage around 1828 . Karatygin appeared in the Alexandrinsky Theater since 1832 . The audience was impressed by the melodic recitation, the expressive face, the picturesque poses and the monumental splendor of his majestic figure. Belinsky exaggerated that the theater trembled with applause when Karatygin in the role of Belisarius - not speaking a word - drove across the stage in the triumphal chariot.

After turning to Greek tragedy, Karatygin, the man with the strong, pleasant voice, favored Shakespeare and shone in Schiller's plays - in The Robbers as Karl Moor, in Maria Stuart as Leicester and in a role in the Bride of Messina . He also played in pieces by Racine , Corneille , Voltaire , Pushkin , Gribojedow , Lermontow , Kukolnik , Polewoi , Dumas and Hugo .

In the period from 1830 to 1850, Vasily Karatygin translated over forty plays for the Petersburg stage.

Since February 1827 he was married to the actress Alexandra Kolossowa (1802-1880).

Vasily Karatygin died in 1853 and was buried in the Smolensk Cemetery in Petersburg . In the 1930s his remains were transferred to the Tikhvin cemetery .
