action

15-year-old Marie lives in a suburb of Paris. She is friends with the slightly chubby Anne, who actively does synchronized swimming. Anne is in love with the water polo player François, with whom she wants to have her first time. Although he has involuntarily seen her naked in the locker room, he has shown no interest in her afterwards. Marie, who is thin and lanky and, unlike her friend, has no bust size, has not yet developed much interest in boys. When she accompanied Anne to a dubbing competition one day, however, she was enthusiastic about the presentation of the teams. Fascinated, she watches a junior performance and admires the group's captain, Floriane. She would like to be like her and even asks when the synchronized swimming beginners' courses start. Anne takes Marie to one of the regular synchronized swimmers' parties. Here Marie meets Floriane in the toilet and confesses that she would like to watch the groups train once. Floriane lets her give her a piece of chewing gum, checks her breath, and a little later is deeply immersed in a hug with François. Anne leaves the party disappointed.

The next day, Marie checks out Floriane on the way to training and asks her to watch. She wants to grant her a wish for it. Floriane lets her watch and Marie is fascinated by the movements of the girls above and below the water. Floriane, on the other hand, who is considered a slut by the other girls and who is said to have numerous affairs and bed stories, fulfills her wish with Marie. She has to pick Floriane up at home and take her on a date with François. Marie patiently waits for Floriane and brings her back home later. Then she feels guilty about Anne. Nevertheless, she agrees to a new agreement with Floriane and is allowed to accompany the swimmers to a competition outside the suburb. Shortly before the competition, Floriane disappears with the masseur in the changing room and the girls whisper that Floriane is misbehaving again. They warn Marie about her friend, but Marie rejects a friendship with Floriane. She goes back to Anne, who, unlike Floriane, is still in the mood for childish jokes. When Marie was later to serve as an alibi for a date with François, Floriane picked her up, but announced that she would not wait for her when she returned. She should take care of her bed stories alone. Floriane is upset and confesses to Marie that in reality she has never got beyond kissing the boys. However, her reputation precedes her and ultimately prevents her from actually sleeping with a boy, if everything would then come to light. Marie and Floriane spend the afternoon together and Floriane learns that Marie is still completely inexperienced sexually. Later the two youngsters lie together on Florian's bed and look at the ceiling, worrying about death and the fact that most people end up seeing that ceiling. When Marie leaves, Floriane quickly takes away the rubbish. Marie secretly takes the garbage bag and empties it at home. She eats an apple bitten by Floriane and reacts ecstatically to her intimate closeness to the young person.

A few days later, Marie sees Floriane again flirting with the masseur. Later, both girls lie on the bed and discuss how Floriane could lose her innocence. She is now planning to flirt with an unknown older man in a disco and meet him for the first time. In the disco, Marie and Floriane first dance together and Floriane pretends to kiss Marie. Later Floriane retreats into a car with a man, but Marie interrupts them both while kissing and gets Floriane out of the car. This is relieved and the girls hug each other. In front of Marie's front door, Floriane asks her to deflower her. Marie calmly but firmly refuses this request. She meets up with Anne again, but is increasingly annoyed by her infantile manner and finally ends her friendship. In the swimming pool, Anne recognizes that Marie is friends with Floriane, and in fact they can only be seen together. In the locker room, Floriane Marie confesses that she is in trouble. François wanted to come to her in the evening and her parents were not there. Marie now agrees to deflower Floriane and implements it by hand in Floriane's bedroom in the afternoon. Shortly afterwards, François appears and Floriane complements Marie out. Marie waits a long time in front of Floriane's apartment and finally goes home in despair. She throws away Floriane's rubbish, which she has collected for a long time, crying.

That evening, François appears at Anne and falls passionately on her. The surprised Anne experiences her first time. A little later, she visits Marie, who is desperate because she believes that Floriane has slept with François. However, Anne tells her that Floriane refused and that François therefore came to her. Marie is relieved and happy for Anne. She admits that she loves Floriane and was jealous. Marie and Anne are friends again. Together they go to a party of the synchronized swimmers, where Marie and Floriane smile tentatively at each other. Anne, in turn, is taken into an adjoining room by François. Before François wants to sleep with Anne again, he says that she is "ok". Anne spits at him before leaving. She wants to leave the party, but Marie hopes to be able to talk to Floriane. She eventually pulls her into a locker room on the pretext that she has a question. Floriane takes her to her and they kiss deeply. Then Floriane does her make-up and goes back to the boys. Marie is confused, washes Florianes lipstick from her face at the training pool and finally jumps into the water in full clothes. Anne joins them and jumps after them. Finally both float backwards on the water, head to head, forming a pattern with arms and legs.

criticism

The film service praised Water Lilies , who “deals sensitively with the subject of pubertal sexuality, which is otherwise mostly sold as comedy slapstick. He not only convinces with the precisely observing, calm narrative style, but above all with the memorable actresses who bravely bring their physicality into the film. ” Der Spiegel found that the film unfolds beautiful, dark magic. Cinema criticized the fact that the basic structure of the film - few dialogues and “silent looks from the girls” - creates a distance from the audience. The film is a “brittle study of puberty that deliberately refrains from allowing romantic feelings to arise”. Critic.de , on the other hand, emphasized that the film becomes a “universal narrative about the longing for love and the resulting disappointments” precisely because of its “reduction to the elementary”.
