Wayne Neville Routledge (born January 7, 1985 in Sidcup , London ) is an English football player . The winger has been under contract with Swansea City since August 2010 .
Career
Routledge began his professional career at Crystal Palace . When he made his debut in October 2001 he was only 16 years old. He made his starting eleven debut in September 2002 and scored the opening goal against the Wolves in the first minute of the game (final score 4: 2).
He rose with Palace in 2004 after victories in the promotion playoffs over West Ham United and Sunderland FC in the Premier League . There, the talent on the right wing got eight assists and one goal over the course of the season. Routledge rejects a contract offer from Crystal Palace after it became clear that the club will be relegated from the top division again. Due to his age, despite the expiring contract, he was not a free transfer player on the transfer market. The Tottenham Hotspur agreed with Routledge, but had to pay compensation to Crystal Palace, which initially demanded three million pounds.
On his league debut for Tottenham in August 2005, he broke his leg and was out for several months. He made his comeback in mid-December and was awarded for the back of the season to the league rivals Portsmouth FC , where he came to 13 league appearances. In the 2006/07 season he was loaned to Fulham as part of the transfer of Steed Malbranque , who moved from Fulham to Tottenham.
At Tottenham he was only used sporadically after his return from Fulham and he therefore moved to league rivals Aston Villa at the end of January 2008 for a transfer fee of 1.25 million pounds . He signed a contract until the summer of 2009.
On January 2, 2009, Aston Villa announced the move to Routledge's championship representative Queens Park Rangers . After he secured a regular place there, he was signed by Newcastle United in January 2010 . The winger signed a contract with the Magpies until the end of June 2013.
Routledge was used in English U-16, U-19 and U-21 competitions. Among other things, he was in the first official match in the newly opened Wembley Stadium between England's U-21s and Italy and scored the 2-1 opening goal (final score 3: 3).
