Joseph Peter "Joe" Rodon (born October 22, 1997 in Llangyfelach , Swansea ) is a Welsh football player who is under contract with Swansea City in the EFL Championship . He occupies the position of central defender both in the club and in the Welsh national team .
Career
society
Rodon started at the age of eight years at Swansea City , the only professional association in the area of his hometown Llangyfelach , with the football games . He signed his first professional contract with the Swans in 2015, around ten years after joining the team. This season, however, he did not collect any operating times in the first team, but played for the U-23 team in the Premier League 2. He retained this status in the following season. For the 2017/18 season he took over the captain's armband in the reserve team and was listed for the first time in the matchday squad of a Premier League game on October 28 (matchday 10) in the 1: 2 away defeat . For his competitive debut, it was not enough for the time being.
On January 30, 2018, he moved to fourth division Cheltenham Town on loan , where he was supposed to gain his first experience at a higher football level by the end of the 2017/18 season . He made his debut on February 3 (Matchday 31), when he was in the 1-1 draw against Grimsby Town from the start on the field. In the rest of the season he came to eleven more missions and then returned to Wales.
Swansea had to relegate to the second-rate EFL Championship in the 2017/18 season and numerous central defenders left the club as a result. The new head coach Graham Potter had to rebuild the entire team during the upheaval and the returnees benefited from this. On August 11, 2018 (2nd matchday), he made his competitive debut for the first team in a 1-0 home win against Preston North End . Potter subsequently gave Rodon the confidence and made him a regular alongside captain Mike van der Hoorn . He slipped out of this completely at the end of January 2019, but still made 27 league appearances in his first season 2018/19 in the squad of the second division team.
National team
Rodon played twelve games for the Welsh U-20 and U-21 national teams between 2016 and 2018 .
On September 6, 2019, he made his debut in a 2-1 home win in the qualifying game for the 2020 World Cup in the A selection .
