Benjamin "Ben" Cabango (born May 30, 2000 in Cardiff ) is a Welsh football player of Angolan descent who is under contract with Swansea City in the English Football League Championship . The center- back has been a Welsh Under-21 international since September 2019 .

Personal

Ben Cabango was born in Cardiff, the capital of Wales, to an Angolan and a Welsh woman. His younger brother Theo plays rugby and, like him, attended Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr , a Welsh-language school in Cardiff.

Cabango began his football training at the age of five with the local amateur club Maindy Corries , where he was coached by his father Paolo. When he was ten, he joined the AFC Newport County's youth team . The Exiles , he played on the position of attacking midfielder , but was later central defender retrained and before he could penetrate into the first team, he was a teenager from Swansea City recruited. In the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons he was a regular in the U18 team and also gained his first experience in the U23, which played in Premier League 2.

On June 2, 2018, he moved to the Welsh record champions The New Saints FC on loan until the end of the year . He made his debut on July 10, 2018 in a 5-0 away defeat against North Macedonian champions KF Shkëndija in the first round of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League . In the 4-0 home win in the second leg a week later, Cabango scored in the Saints shirt for the first time, but due to the worse goal difference, this victory was of no use to the club and they were eliminated. Even in the top Welsh league , Cabango quickly established himself as a regular and by the time he was loaned he made 16 league appearances there.

After his return to Swansea City, the 2018/19 season ended in the U23, where he played regularly. On August 13, 2019, he played his first game in professional football in a 3-1 league cup win over Northampton Town . After he was initially only considered in cup games, he made his debut on November 26 (18th matchday) in a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town in the second-highest English division , when he played for the injured Mike van der Hoorn in the second half was brought. In December 2019, he then made his breakthrough in the starting line-up of head coach Steve Cooper . On July 8, 2020 (42nd matchday), he scored his first goal for the Swans in a 3-1 away win against Birmingham City .

National team

In September 2016, Ben Cabango made a one-off appearance for the Welsh U17 national team, before making eight appearances for the U19 between May 2018 and March 2019 , in which he scored a goal.

Cabango has been a Welsh Under-21 international since September 2019 .
