Geography and traffic

Wedelwitz is located at the intersection of federal highways 87 and 107 , both of which touch the district. The through-town passage, which used to be the federal highway 107, has been relocated from the town. A direct connection between Wedelwitz and Eilenburg is only available for pedestrians and cyclists. Due to the new construction of the federal highway 87, motorists have to accept a detour. Wedelwitz is only served by the school bus on school days in the mornings and afternoons. A small stream, the Knatter, flows through Wedelwitz. This brook used to feed the two so-called courtyard ponds. In the meantime it is directed to the newly created pond on the B87. Wedelwitz is also known for the waterworks. This supplied Eilenburg with drinking water even before the war. The next train station is Eilenburg .

history

Wedelwitz was first mentioned as Vetovizzi in 1031 . The name means something like "to consult". Presumably, the place was founded by Slavs . Wedelwitz belonged to the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Eilenburg until 1815 . As a result of the resolutions of the Congress of Vienna , the place became part of Prussia and was assigned to the Delitzsch district in the Merseburg administrative district of the province of Saxony in 1816, to which it belonged until 1952.

In the course of the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, Wedelwitz was attached to the Eilenburg district in the Leipzig district , which was added to the Delitzsch district in 1994 . On January 1, 1974 , the village of Wedelwitz was incorporated into Eilenburg. Until a few years ago, today's district was considered a district.
