The vineyards of the Georg Müller Foundation are cultivated according to the guidelines of environmentally friendly, integrated viticulture. Mineral fertilizers are dispensed with in favor of spreading humus and sowing legumes . The grapes are almost exclusively picked by hand. The yield is below the legal maximum.

Vinification

The expansion of Riesling is mainly in modern stainless steel tanks.

All red wines are fermented and aged in oak barrels . Likewise, the Auxerrois, which is atypical for the Rheingau, which is also processed into sparkling wine - without wooden barrel contact .

The fermentation of the white wines is controlled by a cooling system, which also preserves the natural residual sweetness of the wines. Pumping and mixing processes are largely avoided in order to preserve the fine fruit of the white wines.

history

The winery was founded at the end of the 19th century by Georg Müller, the grandson of Eltville's sparkling wine manufacturer Matheus Müller .

On December 6, 1913, Georg Müller donated the winery to his hometown of Hattenheim : the “Georg Müller” winery became the “Georg Müller Foundation ” with the stipulation that the income should be donated to the community in need. The winery, which was initially located in the Georg-Müller-Haus on today's Georg-Müller-Strasse, was later moved to the historic Wilhelmj-Haus in Eberbacher Strasse. Hattenheim was then incorporated into the urban area of Eltville am Rhein in 1972 . After that, the estate also bore the designation "Weingut der Stadt Eltville" until it was privatized.

This took place in 2003 when Peter Winter, former CEO of WIV AG , bought the winery, leased the vineyards from the city and renovated buildings and facilities.

particularities

The legendary giant barrel in the vaulted cellar of the Wilhelmj House

Underneath is the "art cellar", a vault with a contemporary art exhibition.
