Ehrenfelser

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ehrenfelser white wine is a new breed from Riesling × Knipperlé . Heinrich Birk (1898–1973) - who was the head of the institute for grapevine breeding at the Hessian research institute Geisenheim in Geisenheim - is the breeder of the grape variety . The breeder's original information that it was a cross between Riesling and Silvaner has since been refuted by a DNA analysis by Lacombe in 2010. The crossing took place in 1929, in 1969 the Ehrenfelser was entered in the variety protection register and the variety list. In addition to the areas in Germany, smaller plantings are known in Australia , England and Canada .

Ehrenfels Castle was the inspiration for the name .

The greenish-yellow wine has a fine, grape-like aroma ( apple , grapefruit , peach , apricot ). It is similar to Riesling and is well suited for quality wines .

The Ehrenfelser variety was a cross partner of the new varieties Ehrenbreitsteiner and Prinzipal .

Distribution in Germany

The vine is particularly widespread in the German growing areas of the Middle Rhine , Nahe , Rheingau , Pfalz and Rheinhessen . As part of a partnership with the Rheingau, there are also 100 vines in Berlin (→ Rüdesheimer Platz ). In Germany in 2007 only 100  hectares were planted with the Ehrenfelser grape variety. In 2006, 112 hectares of arable land were still planted, after 255 hectares were surveyed in 1999.

Ampelographic variety characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is lightly to moderately hairy white wool. The young leaves are light green and slightly bronze colored (anthocyanin spots).
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and have a slightly reddish edge. The stem bay is closed in a V-shape. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are coarse compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is moderately blistered and coarse.
  • The cylindrical to cone-shaped grape is rarely shouldered, small to medium-sized and moderately dense. The round berries are small to medium-sized and yellow-green in color.

The Ehrenfelser sprouts medium-late and is therefore not very sensitive to possible late spring frosts. With good to very good wood ripeness, it is characterized by good winter frost hardiness.

The variety is moderately susceptible to powdery mildew and downy mildew and to gray mold rot . In the event of an infection with the stickworm- transmitted brushwood disease , the crop failure is greater than the average compared to other grape varieties.
