Welle: Erdball is a music group from the German-speaking minimal electro and electropop environment, which was founded in 1990 under the name Honigmond . Later the name Feindsender 64.3 followed , until finally the name Welle: Erdball was found in 1993 .

Band history

The electronic musicians Alf Behnsen ("ALF") and Hannes Malecki ("Honey") from Stadthagen near Hanover formed themselves in 1990 for the Honigmond project and later for Feindsender 64.3 . In 1993 the name was finally changed to Welle: Erdball after the German radio play Hallo! Here wave globe! from 1928. The name should underline the appearance of the band as an imaginary radio station. The appearance of the band is strongly based on the 1950s aesthetic, which is expressed through pseudonyms and the wearing of the "moderator's uniform" (black suits, white shirts, black ties, black leather gloves, sunglasses).

The band's first inquiries from larger record labels were turned down until they finally signed with Synthetic Symphony due to the success of the song Nyntändo-Schock . In 1993 the first music video appeared, It is on ; however, the song did not appear on any album. At the end of 1993 the first album Frontalaufprall was released.

In 1995 the second album Everything is possible was released with a new female line-up (Xenia G-Punkt instead of Isa).

With the release of the third album Tanzpalast 2000 in 1996, the band found their final logo symbol, which consists of the Sachsenring logo in a modified form. At this point the band found their current style, which is characterized by the heavy use of the Commodore 64 sound chip.

In 1998 the fourth album, The Meaning of Life , was released, which made the band known throughout Europe (especially in Denmark and Sweden).

The next album originally had the working title The Top Ten Thousand , but was released under the name Die Wunderwelt der Technik . The concept album deals with technical achievements and products. During the work on it several maxi CDs were released until the album was finally released in 2002. According to the company, it was the greatest success to date and reached first place in the alternative charts . Music videos were produced for the singles Starfighter F-104G and Super 8 .

For the ten-year band anniversary of Welle: Erdball the maxi was released in 2003 Nur tote Frauen sind schön with the new female member Miss Venus, who replaced KayKat. With this release, for which the video 1000 white lilies was shot, the band also released old songs, which were still recorded under the name Feindsender 64.3 , and the side projects The Preparation and The Screeching Miew .

In 2004 it appeared on the album Horizonterweiterungen , which was initially only available on vinyl with a limitation of 2000 . Soraya.vc left the band and was replaced for one year by Zara, who was replaced by Plastique in late 2005.

On September 1, 2006, the album Chaos Total was released , which entered the Media Control charts at number 77. In 2009 the album was re-released as a picture LP limited to 500 copies.

On April 25, 2008 the 7 ″ vinyl single Ich bin aus Plastik , limited to 1,000 copies, was released , which was also released as a maxi CD in October 2008.

Der Welle: Erdball Projekt-Film Operation: Zeitsturm was shown for the first time as part of the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig in 2008 in the Cinestar cinema; this was finally published in a revised version in April 2010. The film is the prelude to a planned trilogy, with the sequel being announced under the title Operation: Atahualpa .

For the band's anniversary, Welle: Erdball released a 10-CD box in December 2010 with all the singles published so far in their respective limited versions. The box itself is limited to 3,000 copies and for the first time contains the album Horizonterweiterungen on CD, which was originally only released as a record, and the single Telephon W-38 , which was only released as an MC .

In June 2011 the album Mono-Poly by Die Funkhausgruppe was released . This is a collaboration between Welle: Erdball and the bands Die Perlen , Sonnenandt and Hertzinfarkt .

In October 2011 the album Der Kalte Krieg was released , most of which contains cover versions. In addition to titles that originate from this period or deal with this topic, there are also remakes of older pieces on the CD. For the first time, however, these were not created by the band themselves, but by artist friends. As a bonus, the album comes with a DVD that contains live recordings of the start of the “Chaos Total” tour on September 1, 2006 in Hanover and the performance at the M'era Luna Festival on August 8, 2009 in Hildesheim.

On November 23, 2012, the limited edition album Tanzpalast 2000 appeared on vinyl for the first time. The album includes the mini CD Computerklang , which was released separately on March 22, 2013 as a full maxi CD.

At the end of 2013 Miss Plastique left the band due to her studies, so that the release of the album Dance Music for Robots and the planned tour were postponed to early 2014. Welle: Erdball was looking for a new presenter through an advertised casting. One week before the album Dance Music for Robots was released on February 21, 2014, the new presenter Lady Lila was introduced to the public. In the following November the EP Ich rette dich was released with completely new material.

Exactly one year later, in November 2015, a limited 7 ″ LP including EP was released with the name 1000 Engel , which offers a foretaste of the upcoming album "Film, Funk und Fernsehen".

Another EP was released on April 28, 2017 with the name Gaudeamus Igitur . The corresponding Vespa 50N Special Tour also started on the day the EP was released .

The Mummies, Monsters, Mutations Tour started on October 11, 2019 with a new line-up. Founding member Alf said goodbye in 2019 for family reasons, Miss Venus because of her pregnancy. They were supported on this tour by Rroyce from Dortmund. As irregular surprise guests, both Alf and Plastique should appear again at some of the band's concerts in the future.

Welle: Erdball is known for long concerts, long European tours and appearances at big scene festivals such as the M'era Luna Festival in Hildesheim, the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig or larger festivals in Sweden. Sometimes the band lets the audience decide which songs will be played at the individual concerts through voting or ballot papers.

style

Plastique (at the M'era Luna Festival 2007 in Hildesheim)

Characteristic for the music of Welle: Erdball is the mixture of elements of the Neue Deutsche Welle , the 1980s Wave , and the use of classical electronic aids like the Theremin or the Commodore 64 . The band presents itself as a radio station that publishes its program on CDs. This also means that traffic reports, weather, interviews and search messages are occasionally inserted between individual CD tracks. However, there is no actual radio transmission.

Welle: Erdball is known for provocative and ironic texts that address excessive consumption, the power of the media and a belief in technology. At the same time, the band also created real love songs for “perfect products” such as the VW Beetle , the W48 telephone , the Super 8 camera and the C64.

Quotation from an interview: “… our research on the individual songs, which does not only consist of a cursory glance at the Internet, but really goes into detail. So we sat B. in the Starfighter , spoke to Starfighter pilots who were still alive, had BMW explain the insufficient hydrogen fuel cell engine to us, shot our Super 8 film on the Super 8 medium, among other things, and projected it onto the screen in the broadcasting house, contact thalidomide victims, informed us about the Transrapid, the Apollo 11 mission ... But we also see it as a matter of course to obtain extensive information, because there are already enough people who open their mouths because of a lack of information and little idea. "

Film "Operation: Time Storm"

In 2008 " Operation: Zeitsturm - Der Welle: Erdball-Film" was presented in some cinemas and before some concerts. In the roughly 80-minute film, Honey finds recordings of the (fictional) scientist Alois Haberl (who was awarded the Max Planck Medal in the film in 1943 ), who was forced by the Nazis to invent a time machine during World War II . With the clues on how to complete your invention and where to find it, Honey and the Wave: Erdball band members are supposed to save his daughter. Actor Honey is responsible for both the script and the soundtrack for this film.
