If the sun didn't come back (original title: Si le soleil ne revenait pas ) is a Swiss - French feature film by Claude Goretta from 1987 with Charles Vanel . It is based on the novel of the same name by the Swiss writer Charles Ferdinand Ramuz .

The old Anzevui, herbalist and sage, lives in a small, remote mountain village high above the Rhone at the end of a valley in which no sunbeams shine for six winter months.
One day he predicts the end of the world from old books. According to his calculations, the sun will no longer come back from April 13, 1937, the village will sink into eternal winter, and war will break out.
This year everything seems to prove the respected herbalist right, because day and night an impenetrable wall of fog hangs over the rock basin and the daylight seems to have disappeared. The inhabitants of the village get in fear of life and death under the gloomy prophecies, because the words and advice of the old, respected herb collector were always valid. A doomsday mood is spreading among the population, and everyone reacts in their own way. Some residents stack wood up in their bedroom. An old pair of lovers humbly awaits death. Arlettaz sells all his belongings and drowns his grief in alcohol. The opportunist Follonier profits from this by buying the last fields at half price. Fear gradually takes hold of everyone.
Only Isabelle, whose husband does not want to bring a child into this world, and Jean, Isabelle's secret young admirer, rebel against this scaremongering. They succeed in convincing those who are still undecided not to get carried away by fear and to fight against hopelessness and despair.
On April 13, Isabelle finally leads them up, through the fog that covers the valley, and at dawn the sun finally appears. Jean blows the shepherd's horn to announce the return of light and warmth.
